To the mom/dad of the sophomore: As an introverted nerd myself, I think the best option that won’t freak him out, would be to use his smarts to his advantage. Sit near the social kids in class and gradually build a connection through making small talk about the game, or recent event, and offering to help out when they are confused etc. This can lead to studying together which should lead to what they are doing later that night weekend. If he builds the relationships in class where he is comfortable, he will be more comfortable going forward.
