I’m thinking about not going to my 10 year reunion because of a best friend breakup that didn’t end well. I was pretty well liked in high school, but I’d sometimes be guilty by association since my friend was a huge dick toward everyone. It wasn’t until college I realized he’d treated me like a sidekick follower with not much respect- something that didn’t gel anymore after holding leadership positions in my fraternity and seeing my friends treat me with respect and that no, I wasn’t a follower. There was a lot of other stuff in between, but the final straw was him making the replacement me (someone he’d met in college) his best man (he cheated on his fiancée regularly, and she was a pretty hateful bitch herself). We’d been best friends for 8 years at that point, so that didn’t sit well. At that point I told him I wasn’t going to be in his wedding and cut ties completely. It wasn’t pretty, and sometimes I think maybe I should’ve done it differently (especially with the 10 year reunion in a year) but it’s been great not having that toxic friendship.
It seems like the more intelligent animals engage in more premeditated violence as opposed to acting on their ID. Chimps for instance are known to form packs and go out and murder rival chimps as well. And then there’s humans…
