I don’t think it’s a gender thing, but I think that guys don’t really start to worry until later on because we don’t have a biological clock. A single 32 year old guy doesn’t have to worry about settling down and having kids too much because he can always find a 20-something girl. But a single 32 year old girl only has a few left before having a healthy child becomes riskier and riskier so she’ll definitely want to settle down sooner than later.
From my experience, you need both people skills and hard skills to really move up in your career – middle management and beyond. The reason all those C-suite execs get paid so much is because they understand the hard data, but they can also communicate it and manage people efficiently.
If you have just hard data skills, you’ll be a number crunching grunt forever. Similarly, if all you can do is work with people, you’ll be a permanent salesman. Being able to do both is key.
It’s a joke predicated on the idea that diversity and tolerance are only okay if they apply to a set of pre-conceived notions; everything else is hate or racism or some kind of phobia. Obviously the Antifa are an extreme version of an example (although they don’t get as much condemnation in the media as they deserve…), but their origins come from the same aforementioned viewpoints.
Going to Outsidelands tomorrow. I live walking distance from Golden Gate Park so I will be there nice and early and camp out at the main stage waiting for Metallica. My legs and ears will hate me by the time I go to sleep tomorrow, but it will be worth it.
