    It could always be worse…

I kind of freaked out a bit about 30. Then I realized you can live and do what you want for your entire life. It’s just a number.

  • mhc28 9 years ago on Am I Doomed To Singledom For Eternity?

Excellent advice! Yes, find something physical that you like doing. Good for the body, good for the mind. A rec league for sports, community volunteering, hiking, biking. I started riding a bike to work at 23. I’m now in my 30s and have far more money into bicycles than cars, as I don’t own a car. Lifetime sport and amazingly fun….why do all kids do it and most adults never do it? Keeps ya young!

  • mhc28 9 years ago on Am I Doomed To Singledom For Eternity?

I’m a few years older than you, happily married, and was in steady, long term relationship from the age of around 15-27, with a few blips in there. I guess I like having a steady GF.

Anyway, here is my advice. I was 24 and lived in a major U.S. city too, had only a BA at the time, and made so-so money. I was also in a frat in college. 24 is the PERFECT age to be in a big city, have some money, and just do new things. DO NOT OVERTHINK this. Have fun. Get out and try new things. Seriously. Because before you know it, trust me, you are going to have a wife, own a home, and have far less free time.

I had probably been to an art museum 4 times in my life. Then when I was 24 and living in a big city, I started going to art museums almost every Saturday. Try new things, break out of thinking/acting like you did in college. If you want to marry some boring sorority type girl, go for it. If you want to meet new, different and exciting girls, you have to try and do new things. Going to a bar with other post-college frat/sorority girls is only going to keep you in that same track. My life changed drastically post-college because I played DI sports and all I did and thought about from the age of 8-22 was that sport. And then…poof. I no longer had it and pretty much lost my identity, as it was so intertwined with the sport. 24 is the perfect time to really ask yourself serious questions about what you want out of life. Do you want a wife, kids and a house in the suburbs? Do you want to travel the world and see different things? Do you want a desk job? Do you want to work with your hands and build things? In all seriousness, as someone who is now kinda locked into a life…really think about what you want. It’s not to late for you. So…stop worrying about being single and instead work on pursuing the type of life you want. If you do that, an awesome girl will fall into your lap, at some point.

    My advice:
    1) get out and explore every weekend. Go to museums. Go on a walking tour of the city. Go hear a speaker at one of the universities. Go watch a non-big time college sporting event. Just do new things. There are 1,000,000 things to do in your city.
    2) Don’t overthink having a partner. The best ones will just fall into your lap. I was single at 24 in a big city and experiencing the longest sexual drought since I started having sex in high school. I was starting to overthink it. Then I met this awesome girl on a city bus! (do you ride the city busses? If not, try it!) We were together for 3 years, living together for 2. She decided to go her own way and we’re still friendly. I respected her decision. But, she was unlike any girl I’d dated, was unique and fun, and couldn’t have been less like me. Still, we had fun together for 2.8/3 years. I’m okay with that. Some relationships are periodic.
    3) Get or ride a bicycle. AWESOME way to see a city in a unique way. If you don’t like traffic, ride along the lake. They’re cheap, they’re a great way to explore, and it’s built in exercise. Gyms suck. Remember how awesome it was to ride a bike as a kid? Find an adult who regularly rides a bike and I’ll bet ya $50 they’re much happier than the average Joe. I started commuting to work in a big city at 23 when I got tired of waiting for busses and trains. At 24 I bought a used road bike. Now I’m in my 30s and ride a bicycle daily, both to work and for fun. Hands down the best lifetime sport there is, low impact, can do it until the day you die, not overly expensive. (if you’re thinking only pussies ride bikes, again, I’d encourage you to change your mindset. I was a frat dude, I had fun, I chugged beers. I still like getting drunk and having fun. But…being a crass frat dude for your entire life is not fun. Trust me. At your age…it’s a great time to have some serious deep thinking. Now is the time to go after the life you want to live. Seriously.)

  • mhc28 9 years ago on My Answers To The 13 Questions You're Supposed To Ask Before Getting Married

I wasn’t burning to get married and the idea of being the focus of attention for all those people was not fun either. However, three years in I’m happily married, the wedding was fun and flew by, and now we’ll have son sometime in the next month.

Due date is May 5th. I’ve told my wife…Daddy will always be drunk for Junior’s birthday!

If you find the right gal, marriage ain’t bad at all. I think you usually get what you deserve. I have probably 10 good friends who are married. I’d say 8 have good, sexy gals that I like and like being around. Two of them have wives that I have nothing to say to and no interest in being around. One kinda deserves it, the other guy…not sure how he ended up with her. She’s sexy, but veeerrry needy.

  • mhc28 9 years ago on How To Pretend You're In-Shape Without Actually Being In-Shape

Holy fack. Gyms are the worst. I haven’t been into one since I played college sports and our S&C coaches made us lift weights.

I have some very basic, good advice: find a lifetime sport that you enjoy. I play in a pickup game twice a week. I also ride a bike to work daily, then ride on weekend mornings. I weigh 10 pounds less than I did in college, less beer and less weight training.

Working out sucks. Find something fun and you’ll be in shape out of participating/necessity. Having to haul your fat ass up hills on a bike will force you into losing weight very quickly.

I’m sure most of you will mock cycling, but it’s a built in diet, great for your body, not expensive, fun as fuck (remember how you’d do it for hours as a kid?), and something you can do until you die. Plus, being in the woods or on the road in the morning is awesome.

  • mhc28 9 years ago on My Miserable Experience Living With Four College Girls After I Graduated

Two things: I lived with my parents for a bit while I grad school. I was actually old enough to realize that I’d likely move away (and did) and never have as much time with them. I enjoyed it, they’re both good people and now I see them only a handful of times a year.

I was on a university trip to Japan. We traveled with a group of Japanese students. We were all in the “business hotel” and I had my own room, after a few nights of shared rooms. The place had porno! Obviously I took advantage and ordered/watched some. Well…it stayed on for the next two days, couldn’t get the box to shut off. I feared the managers would ask me about it in front of the group. But, I also feared asking one of the Japanese students to help me shut it off. Thankfully, it didn’t show up on my bill and nobody asked me about it.

The first scene was a student gang bang of their teacher, first in the classroom, then on a bus.

  • mhc28 9 years ago on True Life: I Hate Brunch

Incredible! I thought I was the only one!

My wife loves brunch and eating out, while I don’t at all. Thankfully, she’s nice enough to let me go play sports or ride my bike and she goes out with friends.

If you have a full-time job, that means you have maybe two full days off a week. No fucking way I’m spending half of Sunday sleeping in, reading in pajamas (which I don’t wear), sitting on the porch drinking tea, and then wasting money on brunch. I’m a trained cook, I’d rather do it myself.

Fuck brunch. And yes, the assholes out at brunch are easily the #1 problem with brunch.

  • mhc28 9 years ago on I Just Moved In Next Door To A Bunch Of Rednecks

Always a good idea to try and meet the neighbors before buying a house.

My ‘hood is pretty good, though I could deal without having to live near undergrads. The problem is our neighborhood is one of the best in the city, but just off campus.

Most neighbors suck. Not all, but most.
