In short, index funds are so popular because they diversify risk for you. Everyone and their brother buys into SPY (SP500 index) because it’s a relatively inexpensive way to diversify your portfolio, and because over the long term it offers pretty solid growth. They’re a great spot for new investors to get started, especially on platforms where there’s a charge for each trade and you can jump right in with a balanced portfolio.
