There’s nothing quite like the sweet, sweet taste of schadenfreude. Especially when it comes to Lena Dunham. As a part of the latest “Rock the Vote” campaign, Dunham and her celebrity friends got together to encourage young people to get out there and make their voices heard.
In case you didn’t feel like watching the entire video, the first minute of the video might as well just be giant block text that says “LOL white people.” If you got past that part, you were treated to a typical “Rock the Vote” video, with loud music, jump cuts and shameless promotion of season four of “Girls.”
Here’s where the hilarity begins. Five of the celebrities who appeared in the video didn’t even vote in the last midterm elections. Apparently there wasn’t a cheesy enough catchphrase that could get these heroes out to vote in 2010. Dunham, Whoopi Goldberg, Natasha Lyonne (“Orange is the New Black”), E.J. Johnson (“Rich Kids of Beverly Hills”) and “actor” Darren Chris all had somewhere more important to be on Election Day ’10.
This is where the flaw of “Rock the Vote” lies. You are riling up people who aren’t informed about candidates or their platforms and probably couldn’t tell you which amendment gives all Americans the right to vote.
So, thank you, Miss Dunham. Democracy wouldn’t exist without heroes like you and Whoopi Goldberg telling uninformed 18-21 year olds to get out and vote because it’s the cool thing to do.
Here’s an idea. Don’t vote because it’s cool. Vote because you actually care about your duty to your country and a right that hundreds of thousands of people have died for.

Uninformed voters: Electing liberals 1976.
So who is the girl on the right? Would love to get in a voting booth with her
Why should we expect anything less from the girl who basically made a video about fucking Obama?
On the other hand, this is a lady who thinks it is ok to sexually molest her little sister. Probably a good thing she doesn’t vote.
To be fair, there is no amendment (or combination of amendments) that guarantees the right of all adult Americans to vote.
That being said, Lena Dunham is terrible, and I can’t wait for the day when she is no longer relevant.
I was thinking the same thing. There is no constitutional amendment guaranteeing the right to vote. The 24th amendment prohibits poll taxes and the 26th lowered the voting age to 18.
I loved that last paragraph. I planned on voting already, but to put it in perspective like that makes me damn proud to be an American.
but if we don’t vote because it’s cool and celebrities tell us to how will Democrats win anything?
By allowing Fox News and the Tea Party continue to exist
Speak American!
First of all, it’s Darren “Criss” not Darren “Chris.” I’m not entirely sure if he voted or not back then but misspelling his name probably didn’t help in your surely rigorous investigative work. Also, Criss has been very active in encouraging young people to vote since becoming an actor. Maybe he didn’t vote in the past, but he does now and that surely means something. So for next time, you might want to Google the correct spelling of his name before accusing him of something.
Darren?
Who?
You took the time to create an account just to pass this message along? My God, if liberals put even that much effort into researching policy they would all vote Republican.
