Being honest about what you expect and what you’re looking for is always the right move. However, that doesn’t mean you need to add to each opening line, “hi I’m emotionally unavailable and I don’t plan on dating you.” You can save that for when the time is right.
As a single Washington, DC resident, this hits real close to home. And you’re definitely correct, Caroline, there is a “race to care less than the other person” (great term for that, by the way).
However, as someone very much enjoying the single life, meeting as many people as possible and focusing on my independence, I don’t always find it necessary to look deeply into my potential partners. If asked about my intentions, I am always honest, and I think that shields me from blame (could totally be my perception and no one else). I don’t disagree with your conclusions in this article, in fact I agree with most, but part of the single 2015 life is focusing more on yourself than someone else. I don’t find that to be such a bad thing.
