Author sounds like she’s from NYC so the boat waving thing is about how people on the shorelines, especially in places like Battery Park, will try and wave to the people on the circle line cruses and The Beast. She’s literally referring to the tourists who wave at the boats. It’s not at all a generic white person thing it’s a generic tourist thing. Like taking pics with the “Wall St” bull (which, like every single bank but Deutsche, also isn’t on Wall St).

Also I just realized how pretentious I sound in the comment but whatever I’m posting.

    My first though:

I work for an international commercial and investment bank and most people upon hearing that say something along the lines of “oh you’re a banker cool” (or horrible or I’m the devil. Whatever) but in reality I work as a consultant in regulatory reform. Banker is just a generic term people use to describe literally anybody and everybody who works for a bank, hedge fund, mutual fund, etc. so when meeting people I usually just tell them I’m a banker.

That means that by this definition of rape I would be a rapist for sleeping with a girl after telling her that I’m a Banker even though this wasn’t malicious or even really a lie. By using the generic term that society has decided speaks for anybody and everybody that works in finance I become a rapist?

I know this is a silly argument but my point is, as Duda points out, it’s impossible to tell where the line should be drawn. Should I be labeled a rapist for calling myself a banker and get the same punishment that a man who tells a woman “I’m actually Ron Howard’s cousin and am in charge of casting small parts for him that are perfect for up-and-coming actors and actresses. Why don’t you come back to my apartment and I can tell you a bit more about it.” *wink wink*

I absolutely loathe this expression but it’s a slipper slope and in this day and age being labeled as any sort of sexual criminal, no matter the severity, is all but a death sentence unless you’re a trust fund baby or ludicrously connected.

Couldn’t agree more. Savage is a very negative word yet somehow it’s become a positive these days. People are no longer scumbags or trash now they’re “savage” and it’s celebrated. It’s like celebrating being ghetto (which I guess was the last generations negative word used positively) and makes no sense to me.
