Yeah. My list is a little different, but maybe more widely applicable. To quote another country music star, I wish I could write a letter to me. I’ve made basically every mistake I could have since I was 18 years old; suffice to say, experiential knowledge isn’t always better than knowing something in theory.
I wish I had known at 18 that trying hard and coming up a little short is 10x better than not trying at all.
I wish at 18 someone had told me the next 5-10 years of your life, and the lives of nearly everyone your age, are going to be a battlefield full of heartache, hardship, and societal pressure. Be easier on yourself. And ask for help. We could all benefit from talking to someone once a week without fear of judgment.
I wish I had known at 18 how beneficial it would be to work hard in college- an interesting, well-paying job rather than grinding away at the bottom.
I also wish I had learned at 16 how valuable it is to physically exhaust yourself. Not to get physically exhausted from life, but to cycle, run, or workout 3+ times a week to the point of needing to sit down while your shower. Those endorphins and the knowledge than you always outlast the next guy or gal – the proverbial ‘extra mile’, is worth more than gold.
My dad still says this to my brothers and I nearly every time we’re together. It’s both obvious and critical – like so much of the advice parents give. Took me too long to understand and heed this advice, but being friends with your siblings is such a blessing.
CMV- check out ZIPS dry cleaners. If you know anyone with a car, they’re $2.29 for ANY piece of dry cleaning. Only 2 locations, in Van Ness and down H Street. Another FYI, Satellite Room has fun brunch.
Maybe this is just me… But I feel like moving in DC isn’t that bad. Moving is never a pleasant experience, but because it is a transient city, friends are always down to help and it’s expected a couple close friends will shuffle spots each summer. *Cue the Beatles*
Columbia Heights is a hike from pretty much anywhere else in the city. And Sign of the Whale *was* a trash bar for broke college students. It’s now a different bar, but still a trash bar for broke college students.
Can attest that I used to drive my parents’ friends and assorted guests to and from dinner parties their Supper Club would have (different couple hosted every other week or so.) Made $$$ doing so, and nothing funnier than your friends’ drunk parents when you’re 16 or 17.

Who hurt you?

Getting significant down votes but sadly not mistaken. Lobbyist for medical marijuana or something equally offbeat is a solid play as well.

Got hit with a pink slip this week. Not sure if I’m ecstatic or about to become seasonally depressed…
