The cold winds are rising and the days grow shorter. As the temperatures begin to dip into the forties, thirties, and eventually, for some of us, the twenties, our natural survival instinct will tell us to stuff our faces with delicious carbs and fats to fatten ourselves up for the winter. That being said, there’s no better time to discuss one of the most important debates of our time—which is better: pie or cake.
In my humble opinion, the answer is pretty simple. Pie is far better than cake. Pie has many advantages that cake just cannot match. Pies have so much variety. Some are better served hot, while others are great served cold. They can also be very seasonal. Key lime pie and lemon meringue pie are excellent in the spring, while pumpkin, shoofly, and various warm fruit pies are amazing in the fall and winter. When it’s cold and dark outside, there’s nothing better than a nice hot cherry pie, as I’m sure many Hollywood executives would tell you.
But I digress.
There’s a wide array of flavors, textures, and temperatures involved in pies, with every filling imaginable. Chocolate. Molasses. Cream. Condensed milk with lime juice. Meringue. Various fruits. Peanut butter. And, if you’re in the mood for something other than dessert, there are meat pies like chicken pot pie. Pie has the ability to offer you just about anything you desire. And all of it is sweet and delicious.
On the other side of the coin, there’s cake. Aside from cheesecake, which is cold but delicious, the majority of cake is only as good as the volume of icing put on it. Even the best, most moist and flavorful cakes need icing to push it over the top. Most cake is served cold or room temperature, which is fine, but it doesn’t give you good variety for when it gets cold outside. I’m not saying cake isn’t good, it’s just miles behind pie as a dessert, let alone a meal.
Although if you consider crab cakes to be “cakes,” then maybe there are a few cake related meals out there. But generally speaking, even chocolate cakes are pretty vanilla in the scheme of desserts. You really need to pile on the chocolate and icing to make a knockout cake. With extra ice cream. But the lack of variety, flavors, textures, and all around standalone satisfaction of cakes just really hampers its ability to be competitive with pie.
Whatever your poison, it is the time of year where various carb-filled dishes are going to be put in front of you, fattening you up to keep warm in the winter. By my estimation there will be much more pie served over the next couple of months than cake, and rightfully so, as it will warm you up, give you a nice sugar rush, give you a nice sugar crash at bedtime, and spoil your taste buds until come January you realize you have to lose 30 pounds before springtime rolls around. But unlike cake, pie is more than worth the trouble. .
Creampies are good but they freak me out
Wait, are we still talking about dessert?
I would say it’s safe to assume dessert is not being discussed here
What other creampies are you thinking of?
Oatmeal cream pies, obviously
It’s not a coincidence that both type of creampies being talked about here produce the same bi-product….a piece of shit lol
Might be one of your funniest takes yet.
What’s a cream pie?
From my experience, a few weeks of mild panic followed by a huge wave of relief. Seems fun when you’re acquiescing a request in the throes of passion, but not worth the stress.
You sound very passionate about desserts, I respect that
Lmao
Pie transcends national, ethnic, and food boundaries. Only a lie can be a delicious desert with a variety of filling and flavor options while also being Italian and covered in sauce and cheese and also having delicious toppings while also also being used to break down data that shows how poor pretty much everyone is via a software application. Pie is a shapeshifter, like the illuminati who has been taking bigger and bigger slices of the globe from the rest of us. Why do you think pie slices are shaped like triangles? And why there’s a triangle with an all swing aye atop it on every dollar bill? It’s sacred geometry, guys. Stay woke!!!!
cake has the juice, but pie has the sauce. Pie forever.
Pecan pie or GTFO
Bye
I was unprepared for this hot take, but can’t say I disagree.
Cheesecake > everything
Cheesecake is actually a pie for the most part but Big Pizza stepped in and litigated the shit out of all the litigations and whatever and wanted to preserve their brand identity. Plus they had backing from the Italian mob so that helped too
“big pizza” lol
Papa John is a shady motherfucker
Cheesecake is basically pie anyway. I’m with you on this take.
Yes
Have never agreed with a take more than I agree with this take
I love pie, especially apple or pumpkin. However, if funfetti cake is in the running, I will always choose that by default.
Nothing like fresh apple pie and a hearty scoop of vanilla ice cream on the side. Hands down this duck’s favorite dessert out there
Makes a delicious breakfast too.
You make some good points, but I feel like not mentioning red velvet cake is a pretty big omission.
Is a Boston Cream Pie an actual pie?
