I don’t see how this is a problem unless you like working 50+ hour weeks and being paid for 40. Overtime is great.
Two scenarios will happen: They won’t let him work beyond 40 hours anymore and he’ll get paid the same he’s paid right now, or they pay him OT. Pretty big win-win.
I’m in the same boat but they are going to giving me overtime comp leave instead of pay. I don’t have time to use the comp days I already have.

Yeah, I fail to see the issue here. Now you get overtime pay. I’m on engineering gig #3 and they’ve all been salary nonexempt. Enjoy paying off that student loan a little quicker.
