For all you “True Detective” fans hoping for as great a pairing as Woody Harrelson and Matthew Mcconaughey for the second season of the surprise hit drama, after months of speculation, HBO has quite the surprise pairing for you: Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn.
HBO made the announcement today after months of speculation involving pretty much every actor in Hollywood, and even revealed who the two actors would be playing. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Farrell will play “Ray Velcoro, a compromised detective whose allegiances are torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mobster who owns him,” while Vaughn will be playing “Frank Semyon, a career criminal in danger of losing his empire when his move into legitimate enterprise is upended by the murder of a business partner.”
As far as a reaction to the two actors’ casting, it’s a bit too soon to tell. Personally, I think both are incredibly talented actors, obviously from very different genres, and I think based on last season’s quality of writing and cinematography, HBO could pretty much cast anyone in this critically-acclaimed anthology series and still get every Emmy nomination there is. Not to mention this season is being directed by Justin Lin (“Fast & Furious,” “Community,” “Scorpion”), and with the great Nic Pizzolatto, series creator, at the helm, Season 2 of “True Detective” is a surefire hit.
No doubt we’ll see a scene with a wise-cracking Frank Seymon getting pistol-whipped by a no-nonsense Ray Velcoro. There are still two main roles left to cast, and if Vaughn has his way, one of them will probably be played by Owen Wilson.
Production is set to begin later this fall. That’s way too far away. I need it NOW..
