Eric rested in bed, half thinking, half dozing as he stared at the ceiling and listened to the birds chirp a cheery song outside his window. It was Saturday morning, and he was content. His arm was asleep, hair tickled his ear, and he was uncomfortable, but he was content. A soft voice sounded in his ear.
“Watcha thinking about?”
The reason for both his discomfort and his contentment had woken up. He turned and smiled at Kelsey and responded.
“Not much. Just thinking about my plan for the day.”
He was lying. In truth, he had been thinking about her and how the last few weeks had been, not that he would ever admit that. Ever since that fateful meeting in sushi class, they had been, as Jack so eloquently put it at brunch last weekend, “joined at the vagina.” Their first two official dates had flown past, and now they were in the weird limbo between “dating” and “dating.”
To be honest, Eric didn’t know what they were. This is the furthest he had gotten into the post-grad dating game, and he wasn’t sure how things progressed from here. Did he ask her if they were exclusive, or would that seem too forward and clingy? Should he still be actively dating other girls? Was she actively dating other guys? Were random hookups still on the table?
Eric shook his head slightly, clearing his thoughts. It was way too early on a Saturday for that level of introspection, and to be honest, he was enjoying not knowing exactly what was going on. He and Kelsey had great chemistry, but when it came to her feelings on their pseudo-relationship, she was a closed book. He had no idea where she stood, or what she wanted from him, and it was exciting. It was the opposite of his previous committed relationship, and he was cool with that.
“Planning out your Saturday, huh? Is that douchebag code for telling me it’s time for me to leave?” Kelsey asked jokingly. “Just kidding. Actually, I’ve got a very important meeting with several mimosas I have to get to, so I’ll leave before you kick me out. What do you have going on today?”
Eric playfully pushed her out of bed as he responded. “Not a whole lot, actually. Probably going to meet the guys later to watch the game and drink some beers. I’m hoping to keep it low-key to save money and brain cells since the Tahoe trip is next week.”
Kelsey didn’t look up as she zipped up her booties she had worn out the night before. That’s right, the big boy’s trip is coming up. You excited to gamble and chase girls all weekend?” She finished putting on her shoes and winked at him. “Should be fuuuun.”
Shit, Eric thought. What did that mean? Is she cool with me hooking up with other girls? Does that mean she’s hooking up with other guys? Or is she hoping I’ll reassure her that I won’t be doing that? If I tell her that, am I as good as deciding we’re exclusive? Does she want to define the relationship right now? It’s too early for that, both in the day and in our relationship.
His mouth, realizing that his brain was currently indisposed, decided to take matters into its own hands.
“Uh…oh, no. You know, I’m not- It’ll probably just be a relaxing weekend. I’ll probably lose all my money the first night and just chill after that, haha.” Less than an ideal statement, to be sure.
“Okayy,” Kelsey said as she headed to the front door. “That sounds boring as shit. Enjoy your retirement party, old man. Anyway, I gotta go. Let’s plan to see each other this week before your ‘relaxing weekend’ in Tahoe!”
Eric scrambled out of bed, off balance both mentally and physically, as he tried to salvage what was left of the conversation he was clearly losing.
“Yeah, let’s definitely hang out this week. I’ll plan a date. Maybe I’ll also see you tonight when you drunk dial me…” He rearranged his face into what he hoped was a seductive look, but ended up looking like the face of a man desperately trying to stay on his feet while sliding on thin ice.
She gave him a kiss and smiled at him. “Yeah, we’ll see who’ll be calling who. Bye!”
Eric slowly closed the door behind her and breathed out. All things considered, he was pretty sure he handled that well. One thing was sure, he wasn’t going to give up his freedom right before the trip. Still, he felt drained. He perched on the arm of his couch and typed out a text into his group chat.
“You guys want to get to the bar early? Your boy is ready for a drink.” .
Eric is about as smooth as a teenage boys face before he uses Proactiv.
This poor kid is about to mindfuck himself right out of this great situation
Isn’t that how we all operate?
*asks myself how Eric keeps bagging girls that are way too cool for him*
*remembers he dropped $150 on a first date*
I dropped $170 on a first date and then got dumped after the 2nd one. PGP.
It’s almost as if the amount of money spent doesn’t equal success because girls aren’t math equations.
True – I’m glad I learned my lesson. Seeing a new nice lady now.
If they are, leave
Wel that’s just not responsible. 1st date = bar/brewery. Keep it cheap
You’re right. I wanted to impress since she was a little older than me and I already knew her for a few weeks from kickball, but I got too excited on this one.
Yep, getting too excited too early on almost guarantees rejection everytime.
This kid’s trying to go to the bar like 10 minutes after he wakes up. Kelsey got him fucked up.
Is this not normal?
What else is there to do on Saturday? Asking for a friend
Hang with the boys.
He should’ve just said “bring that moist puss to daddy one time before you go” *aggressive finger pistol*
“Show me them titties!”
Name checks out.
Kid has some serious issues with word vomit.
There is no way to make the phrase “joined at the vagina” not creepy and weird.
maybe “joined at the genitals” instead? nope. still weird.
Kelsey is way out of this bum’s league. Be less weird one time for me, man.
only in a work of fiction could she let him off so easy
This is so true
congrats on the sex.
