The Oscars are like The Golden Globes’ prissy older sister. They get more respect, they’re a little more boring, and they take all the spotlight and prestige even though The Golden Globes are more fun.
But an award show is an award show, and a Sunday night with an award show is better than a Sunday night without one. The Academy released their nominees this morning, with La La Land leading the nominations with 14 (tying Titanic for most ever). The other storylines include (but are not limited to): Best Supporting Actress being full of African-American actresses (The Oscars are known for being #SoWhite), Producer Micah’s uncle’s documentary Weiner was shut out, and Meryl Streep (of course) got her twentieth nomination because it wouldn’t be an award show if Meryl Streep wasn’t getting all the praise.

SCORCHING HOT TAKE:
La La Land is going to win more awards than it deserves.
Movies are getting worse in general anyway, so the bar must be lowered.
I have yet to see La La Land, but I watched Moonlight a few weeks ago. Overall I really liked it, but didn’t think that it was Oscar-worthy. Something tells me though that the Oscars will once again play politics and give it the Best Picture because of its subject matter (poor, gay African American).
I’m hoping they give Mel Gibson the Best Director Oscar because Hacksaw Ridge really was shot outstandingly but I don’t think that’ll happen because…it’s Mel Gibson.
Very rare a movie wins best picture and not director as well, but not unheard of.
That being sad I’m betting on La La because it’s essentially a story about themselves (Hollywood) and the sacrifices they make to become stars- they’re going to eat that shit up.
As a single straight dude who secretly loves musicals, I am trying to find a reason so I can go see la la land without feeling wired.
Emma Stone.
I like that plan. Toss on a trench coat, bury your hands deep in the front pockets, and if anyone questions why you’re there alone, just look them dead in the eye and say, “Emma Stone” while simultaneously winking.
I was the same, but I can say it’s actually good. I left feeling happy, unlike wanting to gorge my eyes out from Manchester by the Sea- super depressing
You should just go because you want to. Go on a Sunday night, in my experience there are less people seeing movies on Sunday nights and you’ll get to put your feet up without starting a fist fight.
Sup?
Buy a Fire Stick and never have to go see a movie in the theater again.
Yeah I would pirate it but I’m trying not to be a piece of shit these day and actually pay for my Media
Yeah the older you get the more you realize that things cost shit and you can’t just get everything free forever. If you can only afford it if it’s free, you can’t afford it.
Yeah I agree man, that’s why I don’t steal media any more.
It’s more of having to actually go to the theater. If I can watch it in the comfort of my own home without distractions from people why would I go to the theater. Don’t get me wrong, some movies 100% need to be seen in a theater and I’m fine going and doing the horse and pony show, but if I don’t have to- fuck that.
I don’t mind going to the theatre for big movies but I usually don’t want to pay that amount of money. I’m super anal about maximizing my utility (econ grad) and if it’s not a blockbuster it’s just not worth me dropping $15 which would pay for an entire month’s worth of HBONow. But agreed some movies like LOTR or some military movies just have to be seen in theatre to get the best experience.
Louis CK said it best last year: Best Documentary Short is the only Oscar that matters, it’s the only one going back to someone’s crappy LA apartment and being kept on someone’s kitchen table forever. Watani: My Homeland had better win.
I wasn’t sure if a modern day musical would turn out okay (le mis), but la la land was incredible. Amazing soundtrack and you can’t go wrong with Emma stone.
What’s wrong with le Mis? (Minus Russell Crowe)
Man no love for Deadpool?
I’ll probably catch some serious “mehs”, but I didn’t think Deadpool was that great. Ryan Reynolds is funny and all, but it was just mediocre I thought.
I don’t think the performances or overall movie are Oscar worthy but I would think it could’ve been put up for some technical awards. Costume design or something.
Suicide Squad got a nomination and that movie is a fucking mess. Do I think Deadpool deserves anything though? No.
The only superhero movies that come to mind as Oscar worthy are the dark knight, Spider-Man 2 (that’s putting it loosely), and maybe this new Wolverine movie but we’ll have to see.
Hacksaw Ridge was one of the best overall movies I’ve ever seen in terms of screenplay, acting, sounds etc. but once again some bougie film hardly anyone has ever heard of will take basically every single award as America collectively yawns whilst Meryl Streep, who never fails to make herself noticed, goes on another liberal rant against Trump and how terribly terrible all men and white people are as she later gets in her limo to go back home to her multi-million dollar mansion in the hills.
At least we don’t have to deal with #oscarssowhite this year.
I honestly forgot that even happened, which goes to show how big of a lasting impact that whole fad had (big surprise there.) Wouldn’t be surprised if something else happens though. I mean these people are the kings and queens of drama and creating controversy so I bet some stupid “fad” hashtag will be created and used for a few days until people get tired of using the same one and inevitably get enveloped into the new trend. #Millenials #AmIRight #YesAllPeople
You guys should start #whiteandproud I bet Tomi Lahren will pick it up! Because honestly I can’t think of anything whiter than Hollywood busting a nut over Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone dancing and singing about being struggling artists.
Lol at the racist being racist.
I thought you did us all a favor a fucked off?
Dude….. just shut the fuck up.
Rouge 1 is the only movie listed that I’ve seen. PGP.
A little cheesed I didn’t get the nom for Sully, but hey the Circle looks good, right?
You crashed, Tom. You did the one thing you’re not suppose to do.
Hoping for a Lin Manuel EGOT. Also I need to see a lot of movies
