New York City – if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere, right? After all, it’s the mecca of industry, the center of it all, The Big Apple! Who wouldn’t want to take a stab at making it in the city that never sleeps? Well, in a recent study from Forbes, one in five “millennials” claim that New York City is atop their list of places to live.
But the study goes on to say that these respondents should focus less on New York and more on Philadelphia when it comes to what actually interests them. They polled 2,000 people born between 1982 and 1998 and asked them to rate specific city qualities on a scale of 1 to 10, and the results yielded that Philadelphia was a better fit than New York City.
The ranked qualities (with 10 being the highest) were as follows:
Thriving job market (average score: 8.19)
Affordable rent (7.94)
Affordable home prices (7.55)
Parks or hiking trails (6.52)
Non-chain restaurants (6.49)
Quality pizza (6.11)
Top-rate public schools (6.07)
LGBTQ-friendly environment (5.47)
Access to music venues (5.38)
Presence of a local college or university (4.99)
While I always imagined Philadelphia as The Birthplace of America, it apparently is a place that values quality pizza over top-rated school systems which is something every back-tatted Southie will give a “fuckin’ right!” to. And while I’m not luxury real estate agent like Chad from The Bachelorette, I’d have to imagine affordable rent and home prices are what cause New York to tumble the rankings and what allow Philadelphia to reign supreme.
Just don’t get too into their sports teams or eat too much cream cheese while you’re there – neither will end well for you. .

As a former New York who has settled down in Philly, I’m not sure I agree with the pizza sentiment but everything else is on point. And yes, our rent is so cheap it makes my New York friends cry over $20 craft cocktails while I’m buying $3 City Wides (a can of beer and a shot of Jim Beam). Philly is the best.
Can’t go wrong with sips all summer. Best way to spend a Wednesday
And BYOB restaurants. Saves a ton of money when you can just bring bottles of wine to dinner with you.
Not to mention the “rowdy” BYO Tequila restaurants that basically are a recipe for disaster

Love living in philly… Lots of deals to be found on food, drinks, and rents.
Philadelphia is an underrated food city.
I guess it is always sunny in Philadelphia…
Philly is underrated. Good beer. Good food.
Yuengling, Yards, Victory… Great beer city.
Eat a lot of Cream Cheese, Will?
If my bagel isn’t equal parts bagel and equal parts cream cheese, I’m in front of the fridge trying to find more cream cheese.
What are the ten best cities to live in if you can’t live in Philly? I need things broken down into list form because I’m a mongoloid.
Hard pass on Philly. It’s a trash city. Give me Pittsburgh any day of the week.
Doesnt get much trashier then Pittsburgh
I agreed with you for the first half of your comment, but that second sentence….
As a fellow Pittsburgher, I agree 100%
