Michael Stuban was your everyday mid-level manager, who spent his past 35 years working for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. He started in a tollbooth and worked his way up to management, but like all jobs, Michael’s career came with both ups and downs. His three-decade-long career came to an end on Thanksgiving when he retired. His last five years of employment weren’t great, and so when it was time for Michael to send in his exit employment survey, he decided to go balls-out and hit the reply-all key, distributing it to all 2,000 of the organization’s employees, and walked out the door to enjoy his retirement.
Luckily for us, his exit survey made its way onto the internet, because of course it did, and we get to experience his honest thoughts he’s always wished to share with his boss. Buckle up, because this is a good one. I’ve compiled some of his best responses to the questionnaire below, but if you’re up for a longer read, you can check out the entire thing here.
“What could the PA Turnpike Commission have done to prevent your leaving?”
“I really didn’t want to retire yet. I like my job. The first 30 years were great, but the last 5 years are terrible […] We have no Morale. I feel the PTC is rudderless, that executive level management is out of touch with the average employees, only looking out for themselves. Everything is a state secret, no input is asked from the field until after decisions are made. Employees are left in the dark.”
“What has been frustrating/difficult/upsetting to you in your time with us?”
“The phonyness, example…Giving us classes where we are being told we’re not political. That’s Bull Shit.”
“If there are other reasons for leaving not stated in this questionnaire, please explain.”
“I feel upper management (Executive Level) doesn’t care about us or appreciate us. The feeling I get is; just do what we tell you or find another job. As I stated above I didn’t want to retire yet, I am only 58, but I don’t feel part of the team anymore.”
Ouch. That’s pretty rough and a brutally honest message to distribute to the entirety of an organization that employs thousands. PTC, I hope you’re listening and that upper management starts listening more to middle management – or, at least, start restricting employees’ access to the entire listserv when they’re about to leave the company, ok?
