In case you didn’t already know, the new Star Wars movie has dropped and the reviews are in. Being the 8th installment in a series that started in 1977, a lot has changed. At the risk of spoilers, I will not include any plot points in this article. But I do hope to shed some light on an issue that hasn’t gotten enough run.
The majority of Star Wars fans are older people. These are just facts. Yes, kids born after 2005 have at least seen episode 7 and Rogue One, but this is third wave Star Wars hype. My generation (proud millenial, s/o juul nation) grew up in the hype of the prequels. We didn’t realize Jar Jar Binks sucked when we were so young. We were all in on Ewan McGregor. Pod Racing? Sign me up.
I use episode one as a strong example of generational gap because that kind of thing is foreign to most people who were born in the 80s and early 90s. Star Wars had a classic feel. It’s like slipping into your favorite pair of briefs. Familiar, comforting, and warm. You’re so familiar with it, it’s a go to on a night with nothing else going on.
But If I recall vividly, people wanted to pan the prequels. It was a botched story telling of one man’s fall from the light trying to protect the woman he loved. He desired something greater than what the Jedi cold give him, and the rise of Darth Vader made more sense.
But older people who grew up on Han Solo and Princess Leia hated it. Granted Hayden Christensen was cringe at times, and some of the special effects were really corny, but it was my generation’s story arc. Many of my friends (early 20s) have ventured out to the theaters for episode 7 and now 8, and they hate it. But it’s not that they hate star wars. They hate that “their” version is no more.
Pogs? what kind of ewok ripoff has Disney come up with? All new rebel heroes, Adam Driver being the supreme leader who shops at Hot Topic. It’s not going to be the same old rivalries. It’s a passing of the torch to a younger generation, and it’s hard to admit you’re no longer who your favorite franchise caters to.
Will these movies continue to be made? Absolutely. Star Wars will grow to heights that young George Lucas never could have foreseen. But hating it because it’s not “your” star wars doesn’t mean it’s not good. If anything, you gotta have an open mind and open heart.
“Who’s more foolish. The fool, or the fool who follows the fool?”.

Let the hate flow through you.
You lost all credibility the minute you started defending the prequels. I’m 27.
Thought your name was BoyAreaToucher at first glance
The porgs were tight
Almost 30-year-old dude. Force Awakens and Rogue one are in my top 3 Star Wars movies ever (Empire being the other). Last Jedi was bad because of horrible pacing, weird character development, and structured really badly.
Thought the character development for Kylo and Rey was great, actually. Movie would have been SO much better if they let Finn complete his Randy Quaid impersonation
I wish Rey would have gone with Kylo. Would have been a lot more interesting and set up some real opportunities to break out of the whole good and evil trope.
Kylo and Rey was the best part of the movie. Everything that happened with Luke, Leia, Poe, and Finn was inconsequential or nonsensical.
YUP. Have the guts to have some consequences and let your group of characters evolve. GoT has built an empire by showcasing their world this way.
They should introduce a new character that’s neither Sith or Jedi but has the Force and is unreal with a lightsaber as well as has his/her own special power. They’ll be a rogue that has to choose to help or hurt. This whole good vs. evil thing is starting to get old. We need Nihilist/existential Jedis to become more relatable to the Millennials
This type of force user is actually found in the comics and extended universe. “Gray Jedi” or “Gray Paladins” are an example. Unfortunately, the film universe is not connected to any of these stories, it would definitely be cool to see the films adapt something like this.
Grey Jedi actually are back in canon thanks to the animated Rebels show, and is pushing a lot of good Star Wars content that doesn’t just follow the dark/light conflict. The fact that Rebels has been doing it so well, it’s surprising that “Last Jedi” chickened out on it
Look up Darth Revan before Big Disney shuts down that part of the canon forever
Would LOVE a KotOR series
Revan isn’t canon anymore. As soon as Disney bought Lucasfilm they wiped out all the old stuff. So now it’s the movies, 2 tv shows, a handful of books and comics.
“I felt a great disturbance in the force, as if millions of voices cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.”
We’re bringing Jar Jar Binks back
A kotor Netflix series like how they did Daredevil and the rest like that is my dream.
Couldn’t agree more. I really like the director so I was really disappointed with the things you mentioned as well as what I thought was really underwhelming composition. Despite what was probably a bajillion dollar effects budget the shots were just never quite right.
I will say that I like Adam Driver as an actor.
Disney is the real life, corporate version of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader.
Started off as the unforeseen but powerful force for good. The chosen one. With the guidance of its mentor, it had much potential. Then, it’s mentor died. Others tried to step forward and provide leadership, but they couldn’t control its power. Finally, fear and greed for greater power has led to its turn to the dark side. Now, it is destroying the childhoods of that it once filled with joy. Damn you Disney. Damn you.
The new movie sucked because of poor writing and inconsequential plot points.
Coworker said she didn’t think Luke held up to his own sense of morality. But Yoda and Obi Wan ran away and became hermits when things go south. It’s what Jedi do!
I only watched all of the Star Wars movies for the first time 2 years ago (I’m 24). TLJ is *micah voice* traaaash. I literally laughed out loud at the movie.
Think the new ones are better than the Hayden Christianson era ones
