For me, this is also true when trying to make new friends. I live and work in my college town, where none of my friends live anymore. If you’re too judgy/picky, it’s easy to end up watching sports alone.
I also work with women who are significantly older than me. While they are all wonderful people and really do treat me with respect, my ideas and methods are, at times, met with patronizing smiles or laughs, despite producing high quality results. I’ve come to believe that responses to my work such as these are their way of reminding me that they have been around longer. I’d rather be the young employee who fights hard to earn legitimacy rather than the aging employee who fights hard to retain it.
