As someone who popped the question this past Saturday, couple things.
1. Get a colorless stone. NO girl wants a yellow stone no matter how many carats it is.
2. If she tells you that she “wants you to pick it out,” take her to look with you. Go several times to several different places. Get an idea about what she likes, and then call your jeweler guy and get it designed. That way, she picked it out (in a round-a-bout way) and you can still say that you took care of everything.
I know this isn’t exactly the premise of the story, but this again is a reminder… If she doesn’t understand why you shouldn’t have a fall wedding, you should reconsider marriage…

It’s really nice now to not have your roommates unemployed buddy hanging out all the time and eating all your food while your at work.
