Yeah now it can be won with 11 states, but this changes every decade as we update the census. Also, this would literally require that people from California and New York support the same candidate(s) as Texas and Georgia. In other words, not happening. The electoral college is ideal for a country as large and diverse as ours because otherwise you’d have a constant domination of the government by people in certain regions of the country.
I wouldn’t be opposed to ranked choice voting but there’s no fucking way that’ll work on a federal level because ranked choice usually means creating coalitions and working together and the Republicans and Democrats won’t be doing that anytime soon.
I’m still shocked at how little news coverage this got. Can’t even imagine the media shitshow if the shooter was a Trump supporters and not a Bernie Sanders supporter and shot up a bunch of Democrats instead of a bunch of Republicans.
And that’s exactly how the system was designed. Our government was never designed to have a massive federal capital in DC with broad control over the states. On the contrary, most of our political issues were originally intended to be resolved at the state level, with the federal government taking on things that states couldn’t do themselves like national defense, etc.
Somewhere along the way, this was lost and we now have the shitshow of today where our elections are highly nationalized and people expect Washington, D.C. to be the arbiter of all political affairs of the land. We literally have governors campaigning to oppose the President, something that would make the founding fathers spin in their graves.
It sucks that you’re getting downvoted for this, but it’s a totally valid point. The Founding Fathers intended for an educated population to vote and make civic decisions, something that clearly is no longer the case in 2018. But it’s why the electoral college is so vital and revolutionary: so that people in California and New York can’t go “muh taxes on the rich” and keep Democrats in power and so that people in Texas and the South can’t go “muh guns” and keep Republicans in power.
Honorary mention: the LSU football team. No one is beating Bama this year and I say this as someone who hates the SEC bias that dominates ESPN and college football in general.
Please don’t forget to inform yourselves on your local city/county/state ordinances on the ballot tomorrow! They may not get as much coverage as a Senate race in a purple state, but they’re just as, if not more, important because they’ll impact your daily lives much more.
Thanks for the heads up, I’ll be on the lookout. Don’t think I’m going to buy anything just yet, I just want to see my options and how much it’ll cost since I also want to get a rear view backup camera installed.
I was in New York last weekend so my wallet is hurting. As a result, I will be reacquainting my ass to my couch this weekend and watching tons of football. On Sunday I’ll be hitting up Best Buy for a consultation about how to go installing a CarPlay dash in my car.
I did, there’s posts from this past year on Reddit about this happening as well as a news story from Salt Lake City. The chances of this happening to someone are still very small, but it does happen.
A quick Google search would have shown you that these hacks result in Venmo withdrawals from your bank account that look like legitimate authorized transactions on the bank’s end. So the bank won’t necessarily be able to work with you and dealing with Venmo’s customer service sounds like a pain in the ass. So best case scenario, you’re looking at a massive headache to get your money back and worst case scenario, you’re out of however much you have in your bank.
Agreed. It’s the best time of the year and it’s not even close. Was by SF’s Union Square earlier today and they’re already setting up the Christmas tree there. It’s wonderful.
I actually didn’t think that it was an ad for Zelle…it was way too poorly written to be an ad disguised as a blog post (like the Day Trader series). But yeah the finance industry regulation thing was definitely bs. Agreed that no one’s leaving Venmo anytime soon; it’s the network effect. Just like iMessage, even though there’s better products out there (and Zelle really is better than Venmo), everyone uses Venmo and no one uses Zelle so that’s the way it’ll stay.
There have actually been numerous instances of Venmo accounts being hacked and bank accounts they’re linked to being drained. If you’re that worried, the best course of action would be to have an intermediary bank account with a small balance that’s linked to your main bank account and Venmo. That way, if your Venmo account ever gets hacked, you’re not out that much money.
Online only banks are the way to go for savings. Places like Discover or Aly Financial offer way higher interest rates than normal banks (1.9% for those two, JP Morgan is at 0.01%). As long as it’s FDIC inspired and you can wait a few days to get your money if you ever need it, can’t go wrong with them.
Literally just came here to post this. If it’s a big game, we’ll have people over. For the price of one person’s bar tab, we can have a ton of alcohol and food, way more comfortable seating and the benefit of my 65 incher on the wall with surround sound.
John looked over with his face covered in paint. “I don’t know, man. I guess try to watch this World Series game until we get yelled at to turn it off?””

Unless all polls are completely off like they were in 2016, Republicans will probably keep the Senate, but narrowly lose the House.

Or vote yes on it because fuck higher taxes on our already insanely expensive gas.

Foreshadowing for the rest of their lives.
Probably day trading.
