Inferencing skills learned sophomore year whilst reading “Of Mice and Men” serve me correctly here, it looks like our country sucks at helping students obtain higher education without a side of crippling debt. Old news, I know. But it’s interesting to bring to the forefront again that other countries are really just doing it better. Even Trinity College in Dublin and Oxford in England don’t charge more than 20k a year from the looks of my Googling. Oxford. Ever heard of it? My school cost 61k. For one year. One. How is this really still happening? At least it’s over for us, right? Oh, wait. Your kids are going to want to go to college, too. So, start saving for that three years ago.

U.S. Government: Sure. We’ll give you a guaranteed student loan at the prevailing market rate. We’ll give you a loan that no normal lender in their right mind would give you because you want to major in art history and you have no concept of the staggering amount of debt you’re signing for. Because you’re stupid and don’t care how much it is, you’ll sign up as well as millions of other 17-18 year old idiots and continue to drive the price of college up because of your lack of price sensitivity and inability to realize that a bachelors degree probably isn’t worth nearly what you’re paying for it. Oh, you can’t get rid of this debt in bankruptcy by the way, so I hope you have one hell of a time in college because your life is going to totally suck after this.
Guessing this author didn’t major in economics
Or she just stopped after reading Keynes.
Forgo your $5 Starbucks drink and use a cheaper phone contract. Don’t get just a Liberal Arts degree and maybe stay in Friday/Saturday nights.
Be responsible at paying your loan payments and bills first, save 10% of your paychecks, and contribute to your 401k (assuming you’ve worked hard to get to a good job, regardless of job market). The government says “fuck you”, because history has shown that “people” aren’t responsible.
Research further and see that when you’ve saved up enough money, to find proper investments. Market grows well enough each year, even with the bubbles, that you can successfully retire early. As long as you’ve been responsible and organized for your future.
Don’t be a baby, be an adult.
Scotland: You can have a cheap education, but we collect 37% of GDP in taxes. Go to college for free, but even if you want to make a lot of money, we will just take it from you.
England: Pay us back for your education when you have the resources to do so, but in the meantime we will just take 39% of GDP. That is right, you can pay us back for your loan when you can, but good luck being able to because you owe the tax collector.
USA: Pay for your own education. If you think school is so important we will subsidize you a little bit, but you will bear the risk. Invest in yourself at your own peril. But we only want 24% of GDP. So starting a business or going to trade school may be a better choice.
I think we would all prefer to keep the extra 13-15% of our income then have a cheaper education. Swanson, I would call you communist, but that might imply that I do not think you are a socialist Marxist.
All of my eggs are really in the Fight Club ending happening. Putting my balance back at zero wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.
This is also one of the last sites I’d expect to see bashing the good ole USofA. Please keep it that way.
Look I love America as much as the next guy but it IS possible to be patriotic and critical of a country at the same time
Dissidence is patriotic.
I transitioned over to this site from TFM as the change in my lifestyle and frame of reference would warrant. I’ve been a faithful patron of Grandex for years. I really enjoy a lot of the content on here. However, so help me, if this site doesn’t cease going full retard (read: bleeding-heart liberal) on me, I’m finding somewhere else to look at humorous content while I have a little downtime during the day. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
I made the same transition but I don’t think that the target audience is quite as narrow for this site as it is for TFM, and I can appreciate that. The fact of the matter is that this country does need an overhaul of it’s higher education system. Paying for an education these days is comparable to buying a house in amount of money invested. I don’t think the UK necessarily has a better system, but ours isn’t perfect.
Point is, I’ve noticed that PGP is not just TFM for adults. If you’re looking for bombastic and over the top conservatism, go back to TFM. Acknowledging the fact that there are problems with our system doesn’t make you bleeding-heart, or even a liberal for that matter.
Wow, literally marry me Whiskey Warrior. I promise I’m not a ginger in real life.
Oh nooooooo. How ever will they recover from such a crippling loss?
Yawn, I paid off my loans in 4 years. But then again, I didn’t major in liberal arts.
You don’t major in liberal arts.. and I have 0 loans
You got the point. What are you worried about then, just burn shit down with Daddy’s AMX.
Didn’t have a credit card till I was 22 and I’ve never used my parents’ card in my life. But thanks for making sweeping judgments!
That’s just idiotic. Now tell us your secret of obtaining $244k+ for school; money tree, ponzi scheme, out with it!
My bwains
Mary, I know you’re not new to this website. Making sweeping judgments on PGP is the only thing we have to look forward to in our cubicles on a daily basis.
Well-played, sir.
You’re 24, have zero loans after attending $240k worth of college…..why are you complaining, the system worked out pretty well for you.
I’m not complaining, posting some interesting ‘news’. we do that sometimes. mostly so people can lose their shit about it.
The bottom line is no 18yr old (actually 17 in my case) is responsible enough to sign their life away for 12 years after graduation for 20-30k. Not everybody can afford to go to college…
Yet again, we have someone who grossly overpaid for their education whining about student debt problems. Why are you going to a school that costs $61,000 per year? That’s more than most graduate schools! I finished 4 years at a state school with just over $20k in debt. My law degree is adding substantially more to that, but I only entered law school after doing a comparative economic analysis and went in fully expecting the debt load I now have.
Just further proof that society will forever be dragged down by the short-sighted and ignorant.
