It seems that the older a really famous actor gets in Hollywood, the worse their roles in movies become. Robert De Niro comes to the forefront of my mind when I try to think about prime examples of older actors agreeing to do movies just because there’s a very large paycheck involved. I can’t blame them, but I miss the days when De Niro was solely known for being the quintessential tough guy.
Denzel Washington hasn’t quite gone the route of De Niro, just taking any and every offer that comes across his desk, but the last few movies he’s put out have been pretty big stinkers. 2 Guns and The Equalizer come to mind, but the trailer for Fences (a movie based on a critically acclaimed play of the same name) just came out this morning and it’s definitely going to be on every Best Picture/Best Actor Oscar Awards list this year.
The story centers around Denzel Washington’s character struggling to provide for his family in 1950s Pittsburgh. Every single scene in the Broadway play takes place in the backyard of the families home so if the movie is exactly like the play it could be incredibly slow. But Denzel is directing it and he’s a top five actor of all time so I’m not super worried about it.
Denzel Washington and Viola Davis (who are both starring in the movie) did a Broadway revival of Fences and got nominated for 10 Tony Awards. They both went on to win the leading acting categories, and even from that short trailer this movie just looks to be very intense and tough to watch. The fact that I’ll have to wait until December 25th to see this one is a little disappointing but I’ll get over it.
I like a lot of stupid things, but Oscar Season is admittedly one of the dumbest. Can’t wait to fork over twelve dollars to go see this in the theater and then speculate about who is going to win what. This one will be worth the price of admission. .

I can’t say I’ve been sold that well on a trailer before.
You’re a real piece of shit Duda, but you might be spot on with this one.
Wow, Frank Lucas really struggled after he was released from prison.
2 Guns and The Equalizer aren’t winning any awards. But they are both fun as hell action movies to occupy a lazy Saturday afternoon when caught on cable. And, of the stupid things someone could like, Oscar season isn’t that stupid. I could give a shit who wins, and don’t really watch the awards show, but all the best non-blockbuster movies come out this time of year. It rules.
**All the best movies. Most blockbusters are pure shit.
There’s been a few blockbusters that I’ve seen recently that have been great. But yeah, most of that shit is is all flash, no substance.
Same. Love Oscar season because that’s when the best movies come out. Fall and late winter/early spring are where movies go to die, and most summer blockbusters are shitty remakes/reboots/sequels or millionth superhero film.
I actually liked The Equalizer
Same here. Solid action flick with cool fight scenes. Entertaining all the way through.
+1. It’s basically Man on Fire II (or really III if you count the original), and there’s nothing wrong with that.
Nah, my bet is Michael Keaton for “The Founder”, a lot of people feel like he got robbed on Birdman. He’s sure to campaign hard for it.
If this film is as great as the trailer not only will Denzel be winning awards so will the director & producer. It looks fantastic and I’m stoked to see it
Says in the article Denzel is directing as well.
This could turn to be one of Denzel’s best roles (yes, I’m aware of the preposterous of that statement).
One of his greater performances was in Glory, which is a movie that a lot of people sleep on.
That flogging scene. Holy fucking shit. Also it doesn’t hurt when you have The Dread Pirate Roberts and Ferris Bueller as costars.
Don’t forget Mr. Morgan Freeman. And speaking of, the guy who played the warden in Shawshank.
And speaking of: Brooks. James Whitmore.
Shawshank really is the gold standard on many levels. Even Jake (probs not his real name) had some pretty good scenes.
When I was a senior in high school, we all read this play and did story boards of it.
Is there more to this story or…?
Not that anybody would want to hear.
