You read that correctly.
This is my fitness journey and I want to be honest with all of you.
I hate exercising. I absolutely detest it. I’m usually never glad I went and am hating the process throughout the duration of the workout. Even as an athlete in high school I would dream of the day that I would break my ankles so I would not have to run up and down the bleachers.
It’s a new year, and therefore, a new me. (Right?) I’m feeling ambitious. Many moons ago I told myself I would work to become more motivated. It’s time to bite off more than I can chew and acclimate to being uncomfortable. I told myself that I have what it takes to be the very best, the best there ever was… Every challenge along the way with courage I will face I will battle every day to claim my rightful place…
Anyway.
The idea, here, is to lose hella weight with a pristine diet and limited strain on my joints. Things have been going really well. I am committed to making probiotic protein smoothies in the morning and am having a fantastic time preparing wholesome dishes for lunch and dinner.
Just when I was thinking that I needed to take things up a notch, late, last Saturday night, the diet fairies heard me.
I thought I was yakking from not eating enough while knocking back one too many Rogue Cold Brew IPAs. That’s right, cold brew coffee and beer rolled into one. Super tasty. Turns out my chills and convulsions weren’t from minor alcohol poisoning but rather the influenza virus slowly sneaking up on me.
I’m far too weak to lift my head let alone walk to the fridge. Yesterday, I tried to eat an orange. Didn’t have much luck, there. I could not manage to peel it, but the fruit itself was quite cold and sure did feel nice on my fever-y forehead.
I’m taking advantage of this period of fasting. I’m excited. To me, this virus means a suppressed appetite, confinement to my bed and a lot of free time to Netflix, have anxiety about work and research random topics (my favorite).
Today I have opted for vegetable pho rather than chicken noodle soup. No meat, too rich for my weak stomach. Basil stems and leaves help remove phlegm from bronchial tubes and I know cilantro is a fantastic herb for healing and detoxing. I added minced garlic and ground ginger root to my soup along with lemon juice for good, healthy measure.
I think I’ll have a Popsicle for dinner.
Boy, I feel better already.
Maybe by the end of this term, the next time I step foot in a Lululemon the sales rep will ask me how I “find my fit” rather than assuming I’m there for the “to + from” lifestyle section.
Optimism! .

I had swine flu in college. Didn’t eat a thing for maybe 3 days. But after an 18 hour nap, I awoke feeling legitimately 100%. I ordered a large pizza, wings and a 2 liter of soda. Fast forward an hour, it was all gone. To date, it was the greatest meal of my life.
Had swine flu during that whole thing. After about ten days of struggling, went to my local sandwich shop and was told, “Will! You look great!” Weirdly kept the pounds off too.
Thanks for getting the swine flu. The 99% of us who didn’t get it, enjoyed the panic that gave us a week off of high school.
I was in Mexico enjoying an all-inclusive with a 75% discount. PGPM.
Drank the water. PGP
I was at the latter part of pledging when the flu hit. I was a walking zombie that week, and my school’s infirmary simply told me “oh yea, you have flu like symptoms”. No shit. So they just gave me a small gatorade, 2 advils, jello, and this kit with a thermometer, a mask and tissues.
Fast forward 3 days, I take my temperature and its 103. I audibly laugh to myself (probably due to my hallucinating state) at my then current predicament. Found out it was swine AND pneumonia. They offered to check me into the hospital, which I proudly declined.
I hang my hat on this experience to this day. I can say I survived a pandemic coupled with pneumonia.
I was part of the senior class that got it in Cancun and came back to SC…Sorry guys
My entire class was quarantined for a over a week
Good thing those Cold Brew IPA’s don’t have any calories.
I’ve got some bad news for you… it’s mostly all water weight and will be gained back relatively quickly as soon as you’re healthy again.
Can confirm. Lost 13lbs in January. Already gained it back.
Congrats on the sick
Friend and I talked about how we’d be ok getting food poisoning while in Hong Kong so that we could lose 10-20 pounds in like 3 days.
Hey Olivia, sup?
flu has brought down about a quarter of my coworkers this week, definitely not a terrible strategy for beach season.
Make us proud Olivia!
