I’m hosting a wedding at my home. It was only after saying yes that I found out it will be dry. There will be one pocket on me for my phone. The others will all have flasks.

  • scroogemcduck 11 years ago on Angry Alum Writes Awesome Email To University After They Ask Him For Donations

I worked for my U. for almost ten years (student worker (BBA), grad assistant (MBA), then full time). It is amazing how much money they get from big donors, the state, and the tuition just to waste it on absolute S**T. The advancement office constantly asked the staff (especially those of us that graduated there) to give money back to the U. If I worked for Exxon, you think I would give them a donation out of the paycheck they cut me? Cute if you thought yes. Take a look at how much colleges accept each year in federal and state aid (both in the form of loans and direct payment). Then take a look at the salaries and expenses (state funded colleges are required by law to publish their ledgers…you can find them through the controller’s page on the university site).

Until universities learn to restructure pay scales, wasted resources, and the idiotic notion of tenure which gives professors that godlike complex, you’ll get nothing from me. I pay my taxes – that’s enough of a donation.

  • scroogemcduck 11 years ago on Thoughts From A "Fat Girl"

For real, preach! As a former “fat kid” (from 270 in college to 200 at 27), I still look at me as the “fat kid”. And for a long time, people thought I wouldn’t date my best friend because she was a plus size girl. But as they found out it’s because I like the boys, too. But that is another story for another day. Such is life.

  • scroogemcduck 11 years ago on 5 Things I Thought I'd Have Accomplished By 25

I’ve been reading Postgrad Problems for a while now, and I’ve got to say I look forward to yours the most. Insightful, funny, and sarcastic. How about a bourbon sometime? Anyway, I digress.

So, although there have been many I have thought about posting on, this one finally got me to create account. I’m about to celebrate 24 for the third time in my life, but I still feel like a recent post grad. Let me give you the flip side of this coin for a second: by 23 I had a full time career with a promotion under my belt, teaching classes as an adjunct at my former U., owned three cars (two outright) and a 5000 square foot house (paying a mortgage of course). Now, I’m a software consultant and make north of $70K and work from home.

But I didn’t do a damn thing worth remembering in college. I never went to a party, never had a relationship, and didn’t know how amazing alcohol was until I was 24 proper. I worked five jobs, and took a full course load each semester. I graduated a term early from undergrad and in one year with my MBA. Looking back, I have the rest of my life to be out of college and be an adult, and it was probably the most boring and mundane college experience a college student could have. I miss college something fierce, but more than anything – I miss the fact I didn’t make one single friend my age in college. Don’t misread me – I’m not unhappy at all with the way my life has turned out. I have a fantastic career, I don’t worry about money, and I’ve finally made friends. But there are roughly five years of my life that I feel like are a total waste. My point is there has to be a balance. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy (with no memories…of course, alcohol has that effect as well).
