    This is ridiculous.
When I worked in retail, I made minimum wage. I made slightly more than minimum wage working in the kitchen/transport section of a hospital, starting at 4am and ending covered in god knows what, and dead on my feet. I earned the SHIT out of that $13.60 an hour and I will be damned if someone who half-assedly slaps together a quarter pounder deserves that too. The people who made retail suck where the “lifers” like these people who were miserable about their lives and made sure everyone knew it.

I’m currently doing my phd, and naturally I’ve worked some majorly shitty jobs before getting to this point. Being that I’m a researcher, my first few “lab jobs” were what we in the community call “bitch work”. Cleaning shit, stocking shit, making media, making reagents, autoclaving waste. But guess what… this will come as a shock to no one that working hard and doing well at this job gave me the references I needed to take co-op positions during my degree. Then, I had the sense that in the current climate, positions related to my undergrad (microbiology and infectious disease) weren’t being funded. So I worked my ass off again to get into grad school.

I made the grades. I worked more shitty (and not so shitty) jobs to pay tuition. I sent out emails and met with PIs. Now I’m in the phd program in a very lucrative health research related field.

Is this because I had the benefit of rich parents? Grew up alternating between poverty and middle class. Is it because I have a degree? TONS of people have degrees. I had the sense to go where there would be jobs, even if being dropped into the congo during an outbreak would have to remain a pipe dream. Is it luck? Sure – I’m lucky to have been born a Canadian and have the opportunities I’ve had. That said, I also have an alphabet soup of chronic illness (mostly related to autoimmune disorder) and let me tell you, 3 surgeries during finals is not fucking lucky.

Now I don’t have punch anyone on my way to the cafeteria.
    Thanks, PGP.
