Ah, summer drinking. Welcome back. Last weekend, my buddies and I decided to make the most of a beautiful Saturday by heading to the newly renovated Parson’s Chicken & Fish. We waited two hours for a table, but it really didn’t matter, as I had a beer in hand and the familiar feeling that I was getting my first sunburn of the season.
It’s crazy how much better social gatherings get with the first dose of 70 degrees and blue skies of the season. And while I threw a few back on Saturday, the real summer drinking sessions begin on Memorial Day Weekend. With any group of friends, the beer preferences can vary significantly, so figuring out what to bring can be difficult. To help out, I’ve pulled together a quick list of three nationally-available beers that should leave you with a well-diversified cooler this Memorial Day: The IPA, The Sipper, and The Wildcard (shout out Charlie Kelly).
The IPA
The IPA is synonymous with the craft beer movement these days and deserves a place(s) in any beer list or cooler looking to appeal to the craft beer masses. While the IPAs of old had a more bitter flavor profile, many people today resonate towards a fruitier (dare I say “juicy”) variety. While many prefer the offerings of their local brewpub, a fruity and readily available IPA in cans that is guaranteed to garner rave reviews is Deschutes Fresh Squeezed. At 6.4%, Fresh Squeeze comes in just above a traditional Session IPA and boasts noticeable flavors of citrus and grapefruit, with a smooth finish. And if you want variety in packaging, Founders’ All Day IPA comes in a variety of aluminum formats.
The Sipper
People sleep on Hamm’s. It’s unassuming but damn, is it a drinkable light lager. It’s also the perfect sipping beer and neutral offering for your buddy who doesn’t like hoppy stuff. It’s also incredibly cost-efficient (I think it’s around $13 for a 30 rack) and just won a bronze medal at the World Beer Cup. Don’t underestimate a cold Hamm’s on a hot summer day. Bonus points if you couple your Hamm’s cans with a few Miller High Life longnecks. First brewed back in 1865, Hamm’s Premium Lager has stood the test of the time, plus it has a really catchy jingle:
From the Land of Sky Blue Waters [(Echo) Waters]
Comes the water best for brewing,
Hamm’s the Beer Refreshing,
Hamm’s the Beer Refreshing,
Hamm’s!
The Wildcard
Having an IPA and a light lager on-hand should fill your basic drinking needs, but it’s always good to have a change-of-pace beer that adds some variety during a long day of drinking. Enter Dogfish Head’s SeaQuench Ale. This beer is engineered for summer drinking. Equal parts sour and gose, SeaQuench Ale is instantly refreshing thanks to a combo of salt and lime juice. After you’ve had one, you’ll find yourself reaching for another can. It’s that addicting and can (maybe) help take your mind off the fact that you’re sweating through your shirt.
Charlie Kelly would be proud..

Big fan of any and all beer here but I have to say that a nearly frozen Coors Light is one of the best, most refreshing summer beer options.
Agreed. I’m a Coors Light and Pacifico cooler person.
Coors Light: The working man’s beer
My people!!!! I always get made fun of for drinking coors
nothing better than a super cold on a hot summer day.
I had a coors light for the first time in ages and I forgot how refreshing it can be while also allowing you to drink a ton and not die.
Its the closest thing to a ‘Stone out there
Summer Shandy in a can poolside can’t be beat
Can’t drink Summer Shandies anymore because of heartburn. PGP

Cosign. Summer wheat beers don’t get nearly the amount of attention they deserve.
Where’s Modelo?
…next to a plate of delicious carnitas tacos.
…on a deserted Mexican beach.

DFW peeps- Day Break is a great summer beer. Martin House brewing.
Is that the breakfast beer? If so it’s one of the few good things to ever come out of South Oklahoma
Yes the breakfast one. And I laughed out loud at you calling Ft Worth southern Oklahoma.
