Every company seems to be running giveaways these days. I’ve entered my fair share of Pottery Barn shopping spree raffles, and would consider myself a lover of all freebies. In the competitive world of advertising, you have to keep up with what everyone else is doing. Turns out Megabus is upholding this mantra and decided to do a giveaway of their own. Any normal person would think that the sweepstakes would probably be for a lifetime supply of bus tickets, or something along those lines. But no, everyone’s favorite low-end travel companion is running “The Mega Proposal” contest.
The contest form explains:
If you’re thinking this Valentine’s Day is the moment you pop the question to that special someone, megabus.com and the Yes Girls have you covered with the Mega Proposal contest.
Simply complete the form below and you’ll be entered for a chance to win your perfect proposal. And we’ll help bring it to life in the most unexpected place of all: a Megabus!
Holy shit.
So what happens if you win this misguided contest? The official rules list the grand prize as the following:
Winner will receive the use of an entire Megabus to serve as the venue for the proposal, along with decorations for the Megabus and up to $5,500 (awarded in the form of a check) to be used for the purchase of an engagement ring.
I’m not one to judge proposals. I was once proposed to in a graveyard, which was about as romantic as it sounds. However, I feel like when it comes to asking someone to spend the rest of their life with you, there’s a right way to do things and a wrong way. Proposing at a grungy bus depot probably falls in the wrong way category.
I’ve ridden Megabus once, from Harrisburg to Pittsburgh, and I can say whole heartedly that I would have rather walked than paid the $15 for my ticket. I sat next to a woman who brought the smelliest fish sandwich on board. The man in front of me smoked weed out of a modified vape pen the entire ride, and then lost his phone between the seats and asked everyone to turn on their phone flashlights to help him look for it. The icing on the cake was that both the bus out and back was late for pick up by over an hour. If the man of my dreams had asked me to marry him during this trip, I would dump him on the spot and go back to bathing myself in hand sanitizer.
No number of pink rose graphics and cursive script font is going to hide the fact that this contest is being put out by a company that has absolutely no qualifications in the wedding field. I could see if someone else in the transportation industry wanted to get involved. An airline or limo company that offers free airfare/a ride to an glamorous destination, that makes sense. The bus sends the wrong message. You take Megabus when you’re poor and don’t care about your physical safety in the event of an automobile accident, not when you want to pop the big question.
Perhaps the most important aspect of any proposal is the photos. These candid shots can boost your Instagram to a new level if you do it right. Instead of a beach background, or a wooded landscape, this poor proposal receiver’s pictures will have a big ole’ logo in the back, or those terrible vomit patterned bus seats. The photos that are supposed to showcase one of the most important moments in your life has will instead serve as a loud advertising ploy.
One of the last questions on the registration form reads, “Why do you want to propose on a Megabus?” I would love to be part of the team that gets to sift through the responses just so I can see what reasons people came up with. I cannot imagine that there is anyone in this world that was desperate to propose on board one of these big honkers prior to this contest running. No matter what answer applicants submit, the honest answer from everyone is, “Because you’re giving away free money and buying the ring.”

I wish Todd proposed to Girl on a Megabus.
“I was once proposed to in a graveyard” seems like something you need to write ASAP.
Seriously, Kellie’s burying the lede on this one.
Content like that doesn’t just happen to everyone.
you’ve convinced me. It may be a let down though, fair warning!
I only made an account on this website to tell you that I want to read this article.
And to think I got lambasted for popping the question in front of the Bean in Millennium Park in Chicago.
This would work better if it was for a bachelor party and not a proposal
Rag on megabus all you want but getting a $4 ticket from Columbus to Toronto was pretty great considering it saved me over $1000 on a plane ticket.
At the risk of sounding like a broke boy, I’m with you. I go Philly-NYC a lot and I’d burn through way more money if I took Amtrak every time. If work trips coincide I’ll expense a train, but an hour saved isn’t worth dropping 5x the price of a bus ticket each way
“not the move”
The only way I can see this being cool is if you met on a megabus but that is stretching it
I feel like someone that works at Megabus marketing reads PGP and knows that Will sometimes rides the bus to see his GF, and knows that Will needs to propose…
Dang I forgot emojis don’t come in. ::wink face emoji::
I rather set myself on fire than ride the megabus
*Atlanta
That seems like a bit of a stretch
