If you live in the DC area and enjoy playing rec-league softball while simultaneously drinking beer, I have a message for you: Avoid the national mall.
Park Police are allegedly a little trigger happy these days and are skipping past warnings and citations for patrons who violate the open container law and going straight for the ‘cuffs.
From Popville:
@miss_malaska tweets us:
“calling for backup and arresting 4 attorneys @ rec softball on the #Mall”
A reader also forwards an email:
“…as my team was leaving the Mall yesterday, there were 3 park police cop cars by a softball team (not our league) on the ellipse. 4 softball players were handcuffed in the back of the car. We asked the team what happened, and they said the cops came over and said they had warned teams about beer last week and were arresting people for open containers this week. Not tickets, not citations, HANDCUFFED IN COP CARS.
Gah, there is nothing more obnoxious than a “tough guy” junior cop policing the park. I mean, come on. Arresting dudes for drinking beer while they play softball? That’s a little harsh. Where is the stereotypical cool cop that says, “Hey guys, I need you to pour those beers out. Sorry, it’s just policy. Have fun!” and then fist-bumps you as he peels out on his segway? Does he no longer exist on the force?
I’d have to imagine that arresting four lawyers in the nation’s capitol for drinking beer won’t do as much harm as you’d think. If these guys can’t get their sentences reduced to under ten hours of community service, they should be reported to the state bar for ineptitude..

Thanks, Obama.
I thought this was America!
Always use protection, koozie up.
