Last Thursday was quite the day. Dropped my kid off at summer camp, then headed up to Austin, Texas for a work meeting.
When I type it out like that it actually wasn’t quite the day, so I take back that statement. It was just a day. But, during this day, my girlfriend stayed home as she had been sick with a pretty miserable sinus infection as of late. All the Ts & Ps out to her, but I think she’s through the worst of it.
While I was at work, she treated herself to some much needed R&R. A Z-Pak, some lounging, and Netflix. After hearing about all the hype, she decided to give the reboot of Queer Eye a shot.
Roughly six hours later, I arrived home to find that she was six episodes deep and also feeling a hundred times better. At this point, I’m not sure if it was the medicine or the five trendy gay men, but she had a healthy spark that had eluded her the past few days.
After I put my offspring to bed, I agreed to partake in her new TV addiction, partly because I make her watch so much shit I know she’s probably not going to like, and partly because I knew I’d probably like it.

She wisely took me all the way back to Episode 1, titled “You Can’t Fix Ugly” with a joyful bearded gentleman named Tom. It took me about twenty minutes to tweet this:
Update: ALL-IN on “Queer Eye” https://t.co/NXwbQKolQy

Yas Queen, I am all the way in on Queer Eye. With all the bad shit that you see daily, this show is the perfect shot of happiness that I need in my life as much as possible. Every time you open Twitter, it seems like you’re living in a hellscape, so this show is the best reminder that there are still incredible people doing amazing things in the world.
Watching these joyful men fix the style, aesthetic, and general confidence of this precious old man with a ZZ Top beard was almost too much goodness for my cold dead heart to handle.
I’ll admit I was unfamiliar with almost every aspect of the show besides the general premise, especially the cast. It took me a few seconds into the intro, which introduces the Fab Five by their name and area of expertise, to realize that these guy’s names weren’t “Tan Fashion” and “Bobby Design.” Once I cleared that hurdle, I bought in like a gambling addict in a bar basement poker game.
I’m fully aware that I’m late to the party; apparently Season 2 just started streaming, so Season 1 is old news. Queer Eye might not be for everyone — if you hate being happy and getting emotional then this show definitely isn’t for you. However, if you don’t fall into that category, then you’ll fall in love with it right away.
If you haven’t already stopped reading this because you’ve already begun your deep-dive into Season 1, hear me out. You need this in your life.
This show makes your cheeks ache from smiling when you watch flamboyant Jonathan alter a man’s haircut and face routine to bring out a new glow in that person that they didn’t see possible. The awe-inspiring home redesign by Bobby each episode will have you browsing the internet for new trendy furniture and accessories until your eyeballs bleed.
Did you know your closet and wardrobe can be such an expression of your deepest confidences and insecurities, and is a huge emotional symbol for you? You will once you watch Tan explain French Tuck & bright colors to a dude with miserable fashion choices.
Do you have even the slightest bit of a break in your personal morale? Some parts of your personality that you’re not letting truly rise to the surface and shine. After one episode, Karamo will have drawn that shit out of you with an emotional pep talk like you’ve never seen before. These guys might be making over one person on TV, but they do a number on your own state of being as well.
And Antoni, how can I forget Antoni? When he’s not letting the test subject know that making a fresh guacamole will change literally everything about his life, he’s got me Googling this on my phone:
Do yourself a favor and make this your casual show. There are some great ones on Netflix; Chef’s Table, Great British Baking Show, etc. But, you owe it to yourself to give Queer Eye a shot to get into your top spot. Throw your emotions in a blender and let them escape, with a few tears included. Hell, it might even make a good Sunday Scaries wind-down show as you prepare for Monday.
Now excuse me while I throw my life into shambles in hopes that the Fab Five will show up at my door. .
William deFries should go on this show, I’d love to see the fashion banter that would commence
I’d rather see Duda on there to be honest. If teenagers can shake him to to the core, I wonder what a bunch of fashion forward sassy gay dudes would do to his ego.
Here’s the plot twist: he gives THEM a makeover
“Instead of pants, try on this blouse.”
FYI Tom and Abby got re-married!
Tan wore his shirt with a French tuck – so I wore my shirt with a French tuck.
No matter how much I tell my gf I’m not into it, the tears of joy at the end always tell the true story.
Love this take, but you can’t be disrespecting Tan like that by calling it a French Cuff, it’s a French Tuck, a way to tuck in a shirt
Went in and made that correction. Pains me to disrespect Tan like that, he’s done so much for me. And clearly there’s work to be done.
Back in the 2000s we called it the “Klein Tuck” after an affluent highschool nearby who did it while in head to toe A&F, probably a trend we should leave in that era
I used my gf as an excuse to check out this show and now I unashamedly tell my guy friends about how great it is. I can’t stop smiling when watching this and it makes me feel so happy for days after watching each episode. Can’t wait to binge season 2 when she gets back (gf might kill me if I watched without her)
I LOVE QUEER EYE SO MUCH
If I could figure out a way to be more like Johnathan and look/dress like Antoni it would be over for you straight motherfuckers.
It’s just soo pure. Especially since they don’t force the men to change who they are at the core.
Honestly I put this show on whenever I need to feel happier. Jonathan is also a great IG follow, he just makes you love yourself more.
Side note: QueerEyeForTheWiFi is a great name for your router.
