From a former teacher, teaching kind of fucking sucks. If you’re not 100%, don’t do it, especially if you have to go back to school. I’d do a lot of research in the state in which you live and see if there is some sort of program available that allows you to obtain a license based upon the degree you already have. I had to take some extra classes offered by the state teaching association, pass several tests, and was on a probationary period when I first started, but it’s way cheaper, easier, and efficient than going back and majoring in general ed, even if it’s a two year program as opposed to four. Also, there are some private schools that allow you to be a classroom assistant without any sort of license if you want to gain some experience. The pay sucks, but it’s an option before committing to a complete life change. Just my unsolicited two cents though.

The debt you will receive from grad school will not be worth it for the salary you will receive as a teacher.

Work in a low income district and your student loans will be paid off by the Government.

My wife’s a teacher and that’s what she always heard, but it’s not necessarily all of it. High school teachers get more forgiven as well as math/science teachers. As a 4th grade reading/language arts/social studies teacher they’re only forgiving $5,000 of hers.
