Remember the days when we were all teenagers and the things that mattered were wearing cool clothes, hanging out with friends at the mall, and dreaming of owning luxuries by the time we’re in our mid-20s? Well, the times have changed, my friends. A recent Piper Jaffray study found that teenagers now devote more money on food and events than clothing, which is a trend that is resulting in the death of many malls nationwide, and TIME Magazine has claimed we choose to spend more time planning for brunch than we do looking for a date. My parents always persistently harped on me about getting my priorities straight when I was growing up and I think we really nailed it this time, guys.
Because I really don’t care about teenagers in the slightest bit, I’m going to go out on a limb and say 20-somethings like ourselves can be easily be swapped for teenagers in that study. Why? Because we don’t just like food – we absolutely adore food, drinks and restaurant experiences. My evidence for my expanded study is your Instagram feed. Seriously, if your Instagram feed isn’t enough proof, go ahead and click on the Explore tab. You’ll most likely find a couple unintelligent looking dudes flexing, a few girls pretending to be models, and about 5-10 pictures of food with too many edits. Furthermore, how many Chipotle references alone have you seen on this site? We are all massive foodies. Instead of actively looking for a date, we are actively looking for the next amazing brunch, maybe with a premium mimosa or 5, endless crispy wedge fries, a mound of double smoked pastrami laid over fresh, rustic bread.
Anyway, did we really need a lengthy, scientific study that probably cost a lot of money to tell us that young people think about food all the time? No, because utterly no one would be surprised by that fact. My mind is always on “Which place should I try this weekend?” And why shouldn’t it be? I’m 23 years old, I don’t have kids (thank you, Jesus), my metabolism is still fast, and we have relatively loose incomes. We should enjoy these little things in life before we have to start thinking about groceries, changing diapers, and future college funds. That’s as good enough a reason for me.
Technology has further stimulated our quest for the ultimate meal. We have smartphone apps like Yelp, UrbanSpoon, Ness, Localeur, and OpenTable. Delivery has evolved into something spectacular, even beautiful and reserving a table no longer requires awkward phone calls. These smartphone apps are basically Tinder for food and it feels so right. I’d swipe right for some $5 endless mimosas right now.
So feel confident knowing that it’s not even mid-week and yet plenty of young people like you are also discussing their Sunday morning brunch plans with friends. Soak it all in. We are in the Golden Age of food services.
