There are few things in this world that I would die for. The list, so far, and in no particular order, looks like this.
1. Partying with Bill Clinton in his prime.
2. A lifetime supply of Dunkaroos.
3. The destruction of Nickelback.
4. My cats.
5. A Spice Girls and Backstreet Boys reunion tour.
Luckily for me, the fifth won’t require self-sacrifice. That’s right ’90s kids–there’s a rumor going around that the Spice Girls and the Backstreet Boys might combine their talents for a reunion tour, according to sources from MTV UK. If you’re anything like me, you’ve planned for this moment since both groups went off the radar so long ago. It was for sure a dark time for ’90s boys and girls all across the land. Let’s all take a few moments to soak in the good news by imagining what this tour would look like if it actually happens: chunky platform pumps, crushed velvet pants, matching tracksuits, frosted tips, purposeless glasses, oh my!
Just thinking about this makes me feel like I chugged a couple cans of Surge. I can hardly contain my excitement for the desperately longed for tour, which should be named 2 Become 1. (Ten points for the Spice Girls pun. See what I did there?) Although neither band’s representatives have released any statements confirming the news, fans hope to hear something soon. I would ask my Magic 8-Ball, but all of the blue mystery liquid in it dried up about 13 years ago. So we’ll just have to wait and see.
As far as anyone knows, the Backstreet Boys are already confirmed to tour this summer throughout North America with the angsty Avril Lavigne. They’re also booked for their own concert aboard the Backstreet Boys Cruise. (Who knew that this even existed? And why am I not going?) The cruise sails from Miami to Half Moon Cay in October. Plus, the Spice Girls haven’t gotten together since the London Olympics in 2012, so there’s that. But we can’t forget about the snarky comment Posh told Vogue after their reunion in 2008:
“I realized it was finished for good in 2008, when we reformed for our reunion tour,” Posh told Vogue Paris. “It should have been the best moment of my life, but I just wanted to be elsewhere. It wasn’t a lack of respect for the girls or the audience, but the passion just wasn’t there.”
If you feel like you’re going through an emotional rollercoaster from all of the “Are they? Aren’t they?” take a chill pill. I’m not going to leave you with that buzzkill of a comment. We still have a little glimmer of hope, thanks to Brian Littrell and his comment to The Sun:
“We are actually in early talks about maybe doing a world tour together with the Spice Girls,” he told the UK newspaper.
I say that both groups should stop what they’re doing, put all egos aside, and give their devoted fans the experience of a lifetime. This tour needs to happen. Hopefully it does, because we want it that way. If not, maybe the stars will align and we can get that ‘N Sync and Britney Spears tour, which would literally cause the universe to explode. I’ll consult my college ruled origami fortuneteller and follow up with you on the chances of that happening. Until then, fingers crossed that this announcement is legit.
