Like many, I work an 8 to 5 Monday through Friday gig. It is just your standard five days of grinding and then Saturday and Sunday off. Absolutely no complaints from this guy on that schedule because having weekends off like most everybody else makes life pretty damn good. However, every now and then when workload demands it, your boy has to put in some time on a Saturday. Some would say that this less than ideal. Others would be more than happy to only have to work 6 days every once in a while. Regardless, working a Saturday is a rare occasion for me and I’ve come to realize that a Saturday at the office is not that bad.
Working on a Saturday definitely cuts into sleep time for some people but as a morning gym person, I hardly ever sleep in past 7-730 a.m. even when given the chance on the weekends. My internal clock has now adjusted to where I need to be in bed no later than 10 p.m. and I’ll be wide awake at 5 a.m. on most days. If I have to wake up and get to the office on a Saturday, I’m not really missing out on any sleep. I’ll wake up and get a morning pump in, shower, and head to the office. In essence, a Saturday workday is just like any other day of the week in terms of my morning routine.
Putting in time on a weekend generally means I am missing out on something I’d rather be doing, so I am much more motivated to get shit done on the weekends. While the boys are out swinging the sticks, I am watching their snapchat stories from my desk. Instead of enjoying a plate full of chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast with my wife at our kitchen island, I’m choking down a week-old bagel and a cup of shitty Folgers coffee from the office kitchen. FOMO is a great motivator so I work above my normal efficiency point on the weekends and can grind out more tasks at a higher rate than on I normally could on a typical weekday. You can bet the house that I will bust out an entire set of redlines or edit an entire set of drawings by myself in record time if it means I can catch the 19th hole with my buddies.
Part of the reason for the higher efficiency is there are far fewer distractions on the weekend to deal with. There is hardly anyone in the office and most Saturdays I am completely alone. I don’t have HR hounding me about signing the acknowledgement form about the sexual harrassment training I took last week. I don’t have another discipline on the other end of a skype convo asking me questions I’ve given answers to on three previous occasions. There is no project manager flooding my inbox looking for updates on projections for the rest of the project phase. Hell, even using the bathroom is an improved experience. I don’t even have to bother closing the door. Do you know how liberating it is being able to drop a deuce with the door open IN YOUR OFFICE? Incredible. It’s just myself and a list of To-Do’s before I can bust out and grab a round of drinks to celebrate the extended work week being over.
I’ve seriously considered approaching my supervisor to request an alternative work schedule in which I work a half day on Saturday and take Friday afternoons off. No one does shit on Friday afternoons anyways and with a half day off on a weekday I could schedule doctor’s appointments, run errands, and do all the stuff there is never enough time to do during the week during normal business hours. On the other end, it is an excuse to get out of shit you don’t want to do with your weekend. “Sorry I can’t help you move, I’ve got to put I a few hours in at the office.” Classic. Some would call me psycho, but this is a movement I can get behind. If you’ve never put in a few hours on a weekend, I highly recommend it. Don’t fear it. Embrace it..
Trash take if you are a salaried employee. True as heck if you are hourly.
Look at mister I-wake-up-at-5am-and-go-to-the-gym. You’ve got a lot of nerve making me realize that I’ll never have that kind of drive, pal.
Terrible take. Weekends are sacred time and not to be interfered with.
The few times I’ve had to work on weekends showing up in Nike shorts and an XL t-shirt is an experience second to none
I just show up drunk.
Nothing beats pouring yourself three fingers of bourbon and screaming at your boss’s empty chair on a Saturday.
name checks out
Working on the weekends is, in fact, the worse. And this take is coming from a guy named Cush? Crazy.
I didn’t even read the article but it is 100% the worst thing…
Show up in a hoodie and jeans. Take off your shoes. Turn up the radio. Act like you own the place.
I work every weekend. I am trying to get out of my job into a regular 9-5.
Financial Services industry, Dave. A lot of different types of jobs here and you don’t work when the market is closed.
Hard Disagree
Working Saturdays is the worst. And I say this as someone that’s worked the last four in a row and the only reason I’m not working this coming Saturday is Passover. The only good thing about it is I can expense lunch so I always play the game of “what’s the most expensive reasonably priced lunch that I can get delivered?”
I thought I was the only one who finds a door open work shit to be the most liberating thing in the world. Right on.
