A recent study from sleep experts in Arizona suggests people who let their pets sleep in bed with them get better sleep than those who sleep alone.
The good folks at The Centre for Sleep Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale surveyed over 100 people and found that those who were letting cats and dogs in bed with them at night were faring better than those who didn’t.
From TimesLive:
To see how pets might influence sleep, the researchers surveyed 150 people treated at the Centre for Sleep Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, asking about pets and other environmental factors. Almost half the participants, 74 people, had pets, and 31 pet owners had multiple animals in their homes.
Fifteen people reported pet-related sleep disturbances in the bedroom. Problematic animal behaviours included wandering, snoring, voiding needs, whimpering and seizures. But 31 people described the animals as beneficial in the bedroom, whether they provided comfort and companionship or served as bed warmers.
People sleeping alone, whether they were single or had a partner who wasn’t always there at night, more often spoke of pets as beneficial evening companions.
I buy this. When I was in college and my roommate brought home a girl, he would always send his German Shepherd into my room for the night. Maybe it was just because she was a well-behaved pup, but Sasha was probably the only living being in the world I’ve ever enjoyed sharing a bed with.
Seriously, I’m not a big fan of sharing beds. I’d prefer, as a married adult, having my own room to sleep in, because having someone hogging the covers and invading my personal space as I sleep is miserable.
But with my dog? Not a problem at all. Sometimes I’d even let her spoon me in the middle of the night. Of course, there was the occasional 3 a.m. bark, and she sometimes had bad dreams, but all in all, I would say sharing a bed with a pet is 90 percent good. The only problem is if the dog sheds everywhere, you’ll have to clean the sheets more often.
Do you share your bed with a pet? You should. Especially a dog. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: Dogs are the best goddamn thing on the planet. They deserve nights on the Tempur-Pedic, as well. .

Cats are for “strong independent women” and hipsters.
The female snores all night and uses one of my pillows, the male wakes up every few hours to lick himself with the most slurpy disgusting lick possible or to itch from skin allergies, I get out of bed with hair all over my pajamas, and both are only medium sized dogs but have found the geometric formula for taking up the entire big bed.
I sleep like shit with my dogs.
But I love them and they may sleep in my bed whenever they want because they’re the best.
100 participants is hardly scientific. With that said I sleep much better with my dog in my bed knowing he isn’t tearing into the garbage or chewing up my shoes.
Horseshit.
-Guy who has had to wake up and let his dog out between 3 and 4AM every night this week
That’s my heelers routine. Every morning, 4am food and poop. And back to bed. You get used to it.
I’ve had him for all of his 8 years. Not used to it.
Damn. Okay now he just sounds like an asshole lol
Between the wife, the 40 pound Australian cattle dog, and the 110 pound Labrador, guess which takes up the most space and elbows me….(hint: it’s the first one)
You should absolutely let your dog sleep on your bed. It’s science.
And wear matching PJ’s.
Coming from a site where #teamtwoshowers is a clear favorite, never understood how people could be okay sharing sheets with an shedding animal who bathes monthly (if that).
I see where you’re coming from, but when that dog is looking at you from the floor as you sleep in that comfy ass bed, how can you justifiably turn him away?
bougie dog beds to put off that luxurious vibe
It’s why I shower twice, obviously it’s not an issue when I bathe regularly.
My dog has three beds, a circular one in the family room, a rectangular one in the bedroom and the one she lets me sleep on.
My dog sheds like a mofo and he smells. No way he is getting in the bed.
