Coach Taylor of Friday Night Lights (played by Kyle Chandler) is well-known as a man of integrity, few words, and strong morals. He’s not normally associated with hangovers, benders, and the Sunday Scaries. But Kyle Chandler? That’s a slightly different story.
When Peter Berg, the creator and executive producer of Friday Night Lights, met with Kyle Chandler to play the part of Coach Eric Taylor, Chandler showed up on a motorcycle after going on a two-day bender with his friends. Being the opposite of bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, he had bags under his eyes and an unshaven face. After claiming he’d “been consuming a considerable amount of alcohol, smoking cigars, and playing poker,” he clarified that he’d “been up all night.” And while normally this isn’t how you show up for a job interview, it paid huge dividends for him as Berg claimed he looked “just like a Texas high school football coach.”
While I’ve spent many a Scary Sunday plowing through episodes of Friday Night Lights (except season two, still can’t believe Landry killed someone), I often find myself Googling Coach Taylor quotes in an effort to find a guiding light. Well, I thought it was high time that I compile all his best quotes so I’d have them in one place. Sure, he’s mostly referring to football, but it’s pretty uncanny how much they apply to your hangover.
“Suck it up. That’s what being a man is.”
“Can you do me a favor? Do the best you can.”
“Success is not a goal, it’s a byproduct.”
“A few will never give up on you. When you go back out on the field, those are the people I want in your minds. Those are the people I want in your hearts.”
“I’m a firm believer in you can do anything you put your mind to, and yourself, you, I believe you can do anything you put your mind to.”
“My dad used to say, ‘It always looks bad before it gets better.'”
“Don’t quit on me. Don’t quit on yourself.”
“I found out that separation anxiety is completely normal. We get over it.”
“You listen to people that love you and you listen to people that you trust. Most of all, you listen to yourself.”
“You grab the bull by the horns and you move on.”
“Stick together. It all works out.”
“Every man at some point in his life is gonna lose a battle. He’s gonna fight and he’s gonna lose. But what makes him a man, is that in the midst of that battle he does not lose himself.”
“Champions don’t give up. Champions don’t complain. Champions give 200 percent. You’re not champions until you’ve earned it.”
“Just focus.”
“You get one chance in life, fellas. You can either take advantage of it, or you can piss it away. You do that latter, and you’re gonna regret it the rest of your lives.”
“You can’t beat yourself up because you’re taking chances on things. But don’t start giving up on what you set forth to do in the beginning. ‘Cause that’s gonna get you nowhere. I can promise you that.”
“You give 110 percent all the time, not just when you feel like it.”
“Stay away from dumb, gentlemen.”
“We will all at some time in our lives, fall. Life is so very fragile, we are all vulnerable, and we will all at some point in our lives, fall, we will all fall. We must carry this in our hearts, that what we have is special, that it can be taken from us, and that when it is taken from us, we will be tested. We will be tested to our very souls. We will all be tested. It is these times, it is this pain, that allows us to look inside ourselves.”
“I said you need to strive to be better than everyone else. I didn’t say you needed to be better than everyone else. But you gotta try. That’s what character is: It’s in the try.”
“Don’t just stand by and watch it happen.”
“Don’t think. Just do.”
“You may never know how proud I am of you.”
“Right here, right now, God has placed you to do what you do best. Go all the way.”
“Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.” .

He gave us a post before 8:00am on a Saturday and you’re still complaining about Brian?? deFries is the hero PGP deserves, and the one we need right now
Eric and Tami Taylor’s advice is the only self-help you’ll ever need.
Coach T is an exceptional man, well done. Can we get an article like this featuring #33? Since we’re on the hangover topic may I suggest kicking it off with “No regrets, let’s make some memories.”
I’m sorry, I think I got some dust in my eye or something…
I needed this today Willy. Thank you my friend.
Brian didn’t coach Eric Taylor’s quotes. He made his own.
