I get it. We’ve all been there. You’re broke, in massive debt and don’t have a job. There are plenty of reasons to move back in with your parents. Financially, it’s a safe play. Personally and socially, it’s a nightmare. Still, living with the parentals is a desperation move for anyone. Times are still tough out there and your mom and dad probably understand that, but that doesn’t mean living at home is going to be any easier than it used to be.
- Your FOMO will be off the charts.
- Two words: yard work.
- Shitty, $300/month duplexes start looking good to you.
- It puts a serious strain on any intimate relationship you have.
- Good luck convincing anyone at the bar to come back with you to your parents’ house.
- Home cooking? Ha! Your parents go out to eat six nights a week.
- Younger siblings are always hounding you to buy them beer.
- Older siblings are always hounding you to move out.
- Dad turns off the air conditioning when he leaves for work and gets mad if you turn it on during the day.
- Your parents thought they’d have an empty nest by now and are constantly trying to get you out of the house.
- Your friends never want to hang out at your parents, nor should they.
- You’re not a teenager anymore. Mom and dad aren’t going to let you sleep until noon every weekend.
- Your mom will eviscerate you with phrases like “You are not living in the frat house anymore!” or “When are you going to become an adult?”
- You panic when people ask where you live.
- Better have learned how to operate a washing machine at some point, because mom isn’t doing your laundry anymore.
- You had mom’s lipstick on your cheek during your interview last week.
- You better pray your parents are asleep when you come home from the bar on the weekends.
- Your mom wants you to “see someone,” but hasn’t specified who or for what.
- They want you to go to grad school, but are unwilling to pay for it.
- They are going to make you do so much bullshit, and you’re going to do it with a smile on your face, because you’re living rent-free.
13, 17, and 20 hit way too close to home.
I loved this post. I get off a 12 hour shift and want to go to bed but my dad’s like “we got shit to do!”
I wrote a post on this via my blog also but I explain why I think moving in with your parents isn’t a bad thing. http://www.slodds.co/general/moving-back-in-with-your-parents-isnt-bad/
