Tuesday we learned that in an act of unparalleled self-awareness, Martin Shkreli was going to auction off a chance to punch him square in the face. It was a win-win all around. Money gets donated for a good cause, someone actually gets to take a crack at this guy, and somehow Shkreli gets a chance to patch up his public image, though that’d be like patching up the Titanic with one roll of duct tape. It’s a start, though.
Today we already have a winner. While Tuesday he said the top bid was $78,000, he’s sold the offer for a little cheaper: $50,000 to a Florida woman named Katie.
A Florida woman paid for the right to punch infamous pharmaceutical CEO Martin Shkreli in the face. Shkreli announced Wednesday on Twitter that a woman named Katie from Florida won the bid and has agreed to donate $50,000. Shkreli will match her bid. Shkreli was once called the “most hated man in America” after imposing a massive price hike on lifesaving AIDS drugs. After recently learning his friend’s 6-year-old son was battling cancer, Shkreli decided to auction off a chance for someone to punch him in the face to raise money for the boy’s treatment.
Well well well. Looks like ol’ Marty took my advice and matched the original offer. Good for him. Seriously. The important question not yet being answered is: will this punch be filmed? Also, who is this mysterious “Katie?” I’m dying to know. I want her to train with someone leading up to the punch so she packs a wallop akin to Kimbo Slice (RIP). I’ll settle for Mia Khalifa face-slapping abilities.
Also, I put in a bid to Shkreli ($169, weekend access to my ’13 Camry, and a beer stained Chris Mullin USA basketball jersey). Shkreli counter-offered by giving me the chance to bid $10,000 on a Shkreli signed photo (the ego on this guy) and a chance to take him to dinner. So I countered his counter with an expired 20% off Bed Bath & Beyond coupon and access to my Charlie Card (train pass) whenever he’s in Boston.
Crickets so far, but ball’s still in Shkreli’s court. I will get that signed photo..
