Highly decorated combat veteran from both Iraq and Afghanistan. Spent most of my formative years in bars along 6th Street and in strange sorority girls arms. Sobered up and found myself in Basic Training. By then, my fate was sealed. I'm a proud Non Commissioned, I hunt, I fish, I'm a sports nut and I spend my lunches in the gym instead of Whataburger.
Great article. I got my ten year reunion notification this year. The idiots are having it on Veterans Day weekend. For vets in Texas, that’s a weekend that falls during deer season. Needless to say, I said “no” before I graduated ten years ago…
My first move in the Army was done by myself. It wasn’t all that hard because I didn’t own anything. The second move, however, was much different. All of the above happened, and some. My request for the gov to move me “slipped through the cracks” at the transportation office, so me and my wife (who just gave birth two week before) had to pack all our shit and move. It was like a monkey fucking a football. This last time, the gov got their shit together and moved me. It was glorious. I hate to say it, but if you’re married or living with your girlfriend/boyfriend, screw pride and pay to have someone move you. It will be less headaches and advil in the long run.
That’s what I did. I used Get There First realty. They are based out of Dallas and busted their ass to get my house on the rental market. It went on the market on a Thursday and on the following Monday, I was at the deer lease when they called and said they found someone.
I’m in a program called the AGR program. We are supposed to be guarateed to be on station for 3-5 years. However, I got promoted within my first 18 months on station and was promoted out of the slot I held. Good question though.
I purchased a home in a small, upscale city outside of Dallas in 2010. It was absolutely the most terrifying thing I had ever done. I was so happy and excited. It was brand new and built to my specifications. Then the Army pulled a bitch move and PCS(permenant change of station) and moved me away from there. I hadn’t been in the home long enough to sell it without accruing terrible debt and having my credit wrecked. Unless you intend to live in that house for 5+ years, I would advise you to continue to rent.
Brian, the Coast Guard cook is a bit of a stretch. Admirals don’t cook. They might hold that Military Occupational Specialty, but they don’t do any cooking for their troops. Also, the base pay does start out low, there is both BAH (housing allowance) and BAS (subsistance allowance) that Servicemembers are authorized.
This is painfully accurate. Also, anything you order for them is the exact opposite of what they actually wanted.
Most people get in incredible shape when they deploy. Just don’t let it fall by the wayside when you get home. It’s easy to do. Get home safe!
Does anyone have a text of the article? I don’t want to join Time just to read one article.
We’re in the Army. Humor is something lost on many people.
Not to mention, driving to Florida from anywhere would cost a rent payment in fuel. I drive a diesel as well.

If the coffee is too hot, dip Erics sack in it.
