Land grant and public universities have a duty to the people of the state (look at the mission statements). As someone that has worked in academia as well as for a large land grant university, it is in the best interest of the people to have the most qualified students. Better students = more grants and research for the university. Prestige goes up. As Cube said, admitting stupid shit people in will only hurt the school, it allows the school to be more selective and it puts those that are more tradesman material where they need to be. Make it affordable to go to college, not 8% plans that take 20 years to pay back. It is modern indentured service. Fostering education in people that are capable but not able due to $ only helps our country.
Probably cuts to defense spending and hopefully, cuts to shitty countries that don’t like us anyway. Funny, we as tax payers pay for Israel’s free college tuition. Personally, I believe public education should be available to those that merit it. We used to subsidize our education a lot more until our good friends, the baby boomers, cut the funding. My college tuition at a land grant univ. went up 5.5k from freshman to senior year.
Came here for this. I wish I could save 10% of what I make. Nope, that goes to student loans. I’m lucky because I know tons of people that default on their loans because they can’t find a job. So many places have no $ to hire new people that cost less, are more efficient and know how to use technology because they pay beefed up salaries to geriatrics like this guy that won’t retire.
