You realize you’re talking about the same fan base that spends thousands of dollars on collectible toys, lunch boxes, and other memorabilia right? A hundred dollar shoe is nothing to them. They won’t buy it to wear, just add to their growing collection.
NHL had its greatest popularity when they had a contract with ESPN/ABC. But ever since the owners decided to choose money over viewership, it got stuck with shitty NBCSports, and now its a struggle to get out of market areas to watch hockey, causing a huge drop in expansion of fandom and growth in youth sports. That’s why pieces like this are wrote. I hate ESPN, but its the largest sports media outlet, and if they aren’t willing to commit more than 15 min a day during the season, (because it cost too much to pull videos from NBC) hard to get the sport to grow.
