The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has been a wonderful thing. ALS is a horrifying disease that affects tens of thousands of people a year. However, this chart shows that there’s nowhere near enough money being donated to the things that are actually killing us.
That’s not really reassuring. Heart disease continues to drop Americans dead in their tracks more than anything. Followed by COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and diabetes. It’s obvious that cancer and ALS aren’t the primary killers of Americans, but rather Big Macs, Marlboros and 64-ounce Dr. Peppers. Even more disturbing is the number of suicides among Americans and the almost non-existent amount of donations that go towards mental health and depression awareness funds.

Looks like we don’t feel very sorry for those that choose to eat or smoke themselves to death, but we keep right on doing it anyway!
I’m not donating money because someone shoved their fat, greasy face with Baconaters, cigarettes, and Mountain Dew. Zero research has to be done to cure obesity and COPD – don’t work in a coal mine and start taking the stairs. Epidemic solved.
You’re right, nobody should work in a coal mine, thus completing eliminating the largest source of electric power in the U.S. Brilliant.
That’s what you got from that? Goddammit you’re a twat.
Interesting, but your source/chart is from 2011… Highly doubt these numbers are still accurate
No doubt Heart Disease and suicide are responsible for more deaths now than in 2011.
What really bothers me is suicide kills nearly as many people as breast cancer, but only receives 1/78 (or 0.0128) of the amount of donations. I get people have no power over getting breast cancer, but a lot of people who commit suicide have no power over their mental health as well.
Movember doesn’t just talk about prostate cancer, but promotes overall men’s health initiatives including mental health.
Grow those ‘staches!
