Now that I have an offer and a start date, I can finally relax. Well, as much as a Type A personality such as myself can relax. So as I had into this last week of “vacation,” there’s a lot to do, but I also want to make sure I take a little bit of “me” time before I re-enter the rat race.
Monday
Happy Memorial Day! I spent most of the day in the Buffalo Niagara airport travelling home from the long weekend, so…welcome, summer!
Tuesday
The “working” days of this week are dedicated to tackling that list of “stuff I need to go before I go back to work.” So Tuesday was dedicated to the ever-exciting task of yardwork. Homeownership is super exciting, y’all. So the day was spent cleaning the yard, planting floors and generally just making sure my house doesn’t look like a dumpster fire from the outside.
Wednesday
Starting today, I decided that I’m going to get up at my “regular” work time, so that I can re-adjust to getting up a “normal” time. To make sure that I actually do this, I scheduled early morning trainer appointments, so that I wasn’t tempted to hit the snooze button.
So 6:30 a.m. found me slamming my hand down on the alarm button, dragging myself out of bed, and heading to the gym. After lifting weights, I headed to Target to grab some stuff, and can I tell you one thing I will miss about unemployment? Target at 8:00 a.m. It’s freaking glorious. There’s no one there, so you can take your time and look around without with crowds that jam that place outside of regular work hours. It’s heaven.
Thursday
Shit got real today – I had a call with my new boss to go over next week. It sounds like it will be pretty standard – orientation, introductions and whatnot. But after a month of not working, I’m definitely nervous about getting back into the workplace rhythm. Particularly one that requires me to wear actual pants every day.
In all honesty, I’m something of an extroverted-introvert so that part that makes me most nervous about the new job is meeting everyone. But I’m sure everyone will be cool. Right?
Friday
How is it already Friday? Will the weeks fly this fast when I’m working? It’s the last day of my last week of my involuntary vacation and I barely scratched the surface of things I need to do before work starts. Time to clean the house, do some meal prep, iron all of my work clothes…and take one last nap on the floor with the dog. I wonder if he’ll miss me when I’m not home every day?
Well, my friends, this is the end of my unemployment road. I’ve gotten a few messages asking for an unemployment diaries “epilogue” updating you all on my first week, so we’ll see how the week goes. Maybe I’ll be so busy at my awesome new job that I won’t have time? Here’s hoping!.
A prominent Austin socialite told me that Dave was in San Francisco looking for houses. Can anyone at Grandex confirm or deny this?
I’m currently looking for more expensive towns than Austin.
There’s currently a 2 bedroom 2 bath condo in my neighborhood listed for $1.1 million, which means it’ll probably sell for $1.3 million.
Jesus. One of the few upsides of living in a midwest city is I can buy a nice, big house with a yard for ~$200k. I have no idea how you people survive with the CoL out west.
I’d say that’s a very broad painting of the Midwest. I know the decent sized, ok yard in a convenient part of town start around $350k.
And “decent” sized is a 3 bedroom 2 bath.
The salaries here are higher as well, provided you’re in the right field. I’m SF, tech and finance are king and I’m in finance. So while my rent is higher than the median rent nationwide, so is my salary. Of course that doesn’t mean that I’ll ever be able to (or want to) buy a house in SF, but there are places in the Bay Area that would be reasonable once I want to settle down with my picket fence house and 2.5 kids.
Be sure to remember all your things, like your wallet/purse. Don’t be a broke boi like your boss DillyDill
As someone who just started job searching in a new city, I hope I can get an offer as fast as you did
It took me 4 months of hard looking to land the interview leading to the new job I start this Friday. (I know, I know, who starts on a Friday. Apparently it’s common?) Just have to stay after it and not get discouraged after no calls back from phone interviews.
It took me 8 months. I had my address in my old city at the top of my resume which think might have been part of the problem. I’ve heard of people putting an address in their future city and then offering to pay their own travel to the interview to make it happen. I got lucky and didn’t have to but I would’ve been willing to for the right opportunity.
Competition for good jobs is ruthless these days. I went onto the LinkedIn posting for my job just prior to my interview and saw that over 200 people had applied. If you count people that got to the company website through indeed, that number most likely doubled. Keep your head up.
it is so hard to find a place in a new city. Easier if you are already there!
Found out I didn’t get a job I thought would be accepted for at 5:45 pm on Friday. Good vibes are appreciated.
It’s going to happen.
Thanks Dave, here’s hoping!
