There are almost too many options that all seem to blend together in American cuisine. Everyone is searching for niches in an otherwise crowded casual bar and grill dining market.
Sometimes you just want to go where everybody knows your name, and sometimes you just want to go where you can cash in every otherwise useless gift card you’ve collected over time.
The Dallas Observer reports that every Applebee’s in the state of Texas is accepting gift cards for any business establishment (seriously, any) to eat good in at your neighborhood for the remainder of March:
“Applebee’s promotion for the month of March is the flailing franchise’s latest Hail Mary: Patrons in Texas can bring in any gift card from anywhere and use it toward their bill. Wow, Applebee’s sounds kind of desperate, is what you might be thinking. Any gift card from any place? Even Chili’s?
Apparently so. “All 67 Applebee’s in DFW, Houston, Austin, Waco, East Texas and surrounding locations are accepting the coupons and gift cards,” according to a press release from Applebee’s. “The Applebee’s offer is for up to 50 percent off of food purchases with any paper/plastic/printed coupon or gift card.”
I don’t like this move – I love this move. Look, we all have our fair share of gift cards tucked away in our wallets that we never get around to using. They come from unoriginal co-workers who pass them out during the holiday season and won in raffles at charity functions in a basket of other random goods.
Needless to say, gift cards go to waste more often than not. I do a spring cleaning of my wallet once a year and it never ceases to amaze me how many gift cards expire before I ever get around to using them. Sometimes it’s due to the proximity of the business to where I live and more often than not it’s out of sheer laziness.
Applebee’s accepting literally any gift card imaginable is a game changer.
The next time you find yourself having one of those rousing “what do you want for dinner? … I don’t care” conversations, pull this Applebee’s deal out of your back pocket. Like seriously, pull your wallet out of your back pocket and unleash hell on your waiter when that check comes. You know what’s better than half price appetizers? Using a home depot gift card to pay for half price appetizers. You should know yourself well enough to understand you will get far more out of those boneless wings and potato skins then you ever would buying a few sheets of plywood.
As far as I know this deal only exists in the great state of Texas. I live in New York city and I’ve already checked out flights to the Lone Star state thinking I might have to make the trip while this deal lasts.
Some people visit Texas to see the Dallas Cowboys stadium. Others want to remember the Alamo. Austin has become a vacation destination. Foodies want to try out authentic BBQ.
As for me – I just want to eat good in a Texas neighborhood where I can cash in my entire gift card collection at an Applebee’s. .

Not having any expiring gift cards because you’re a broke ass and can’t help but use them as soon as you get them. PGP.
How are they gonna know how much is on the other gift cards?
Pretty sure mine are all worth exactly 50% of my Applebee’s tab.
Who wants to go get kicked out of Applebee’s?
Confession: I genuinely enjoy the Fiesta Lime Chicken. I find it to be the best dish available from any big restaurant chain.
In the summer between my senior year of high school and freshman year of college I worked at an Applebee’s in my hometown. Not even this deal would get me to step back foot in that place. Fuck Applebee’s
I lasted all of two weeks one summer. -10/10 was terrible.
I’m kind of inspired to power rank all the shitty part-time jobs I had in high school / summer vacation now.
Wonder if they’ll take Paddy’s dollars
Got asked to leave applebees when I was on a swipe-app date. $1 beers and $1 Jell-O shots, that’s all you need to know.
