There is no age limit when it comes to interning at a major corporation, apparently.
Tank Johnson, who now prefers to go by Terry, is living proof of the ageless intern grind. The 34-year-old former NFL defensive tackle who was once suspended by the NFL for eight games after a string of weapons charges now answers phones and picks up coffee for a living. And which employer was so generous to bring Johnson on as an intern? The mighty NFL.
From USA Today:
Some people still call him “Tank,” but in his fifth-floor cubicle at NFL headquarters, he prefers to go by Terry Johnson.
The former defensive tackle and onetime poster child for bad off-field behavior likes having a little anonymity as a 34-year-old intern in the league’s player engagement department – albeit with big ambitions for his ongoing modern athlete research project.
“With charitable endeavors, social media and your play on the field, those three things are married together to create opportunities like no time in history,” Johnson told USA TODAY Sports on Thursday. “I think that’s unique for the modern athlete, and we, as the NFL, who is staunchly protective of our brand, can teach our athletes something about building their brand and building it in an organic way.”
Life out here grinding as an intern is fucking tough. You don’t just get to play ‘games’ for six months and then sit on your ass for the rest of the year. Who would answer the phones?
I feel for Tank, though. It must be cruel as a veteran to reach out to the NFL for a job and get offered an internship. Did he not have the required two years experience? Was his time on the Chicago Bears and Cincinnati Bengals not enough? It’s not like the NFL is strapped for cash. It generated $11.9 billion in revenue in 2015. Hopefully he is getting a little school credit for his work. Possibly a monthly stipend, as well. If it is just hourly work, he should just bail. I heard they treat interns like shit, anyway.
The intern grind never ends, man. Whether you’re a scrawny post-grad with a degree in political science, or a former NFL defensive tackle who apparently has more guns than most European militaries. This shit is tough..USA Today]

I get this a poke at being an intern in general, but good on him for getting his life together and not letting his ego get in the way of his realizing he now has to grind it out like the rest of us.
Talk about a blast from the past, I haven’t heard his name in years. I always loved how he actually had “Tank Johnson” on the back of his jersey too (Seen here: http://img.spokeo.com/public/900-600/tank_johnson_2006_01_15.jpg) There’s no way the NFL would allow that nowadays.
