“Guaranteed saddest version of Welcome to New York ever,” Ryan Smith shared on his Instagram late last night in the recording studio.
In what should become the perfect Sunday evening album for your existential crisis, Ryan Adams is, in fact, currently recording a complete cover album of Taylor Swift’s 1989 in the style of The Smiths. Don’t believe me because this sounds like a headline from Lena Dunham’s email newsletter? Here’s all the evidence you need.
@hasief @TheRyanAdams is this true??????? I WILL PASS OUT.

@TheRyanAdams Cool I'm not gonna be able to sleep tonight or ever again and I'm going to celebrate today every year as a holiday. I'M CALM

There are two types of people in this world: Taylor Swift fans and liars. I’ve been secretly listening to 1989 since it came out and it has yet to get stale. The only issue with the album that I’m not always in thhe bubbliest of moods, so taking the edge off with a Smiths-style cover album while enjoying a glass of a pinot is heaven sent.
Adams tossed up some previews of the recording session last night on Instagram, and it was vibe-y as hell.
Yes, that is exactly what you’d expect the studio to look like for this. It’s almost as if Wes Anderson had his set designer’s on-hand to make sure everything about this was as Ryan Adams as possible, which I take zero issue with because Rushmore was a work of art.
I already have enough trouble holding tears back during “Welcome To New York,” so this will be a whole different beast.
I don’t like “Style” — I love it. Let’s also hope he can make a masterpiece out of “Bad Blood” and my personal favorite “Out Of The Woods.” I’d put “I Know Places” up there as well, but she mixes up her metaphors in it which is hard to overcome for me.
Banger after banger after banger. Here’s to hoping Ryan makes both Taylor and Morrissey proud. .
