Big time breaking news here.
Deadline is reporting that New Line Cinema has purchased the rights to The Many Saints Of Newark, a screenplay created by David Chase and a prequel to the greatest television show of all time, The Sopranos. Do. Not. @. Me. The film will take place in the era of the 1967 Newark race riots where over two dozen people died over a five day period.
They’re not giving us a ton of detail yet, but speculation is that we’ll get Johnny Boy Soprano, Tony’s old man, and a young Junior Soprano, which is probably the most important role to cast for this to work. And surely they’ll give us a young Paulie Walnuts, right? The dynamic between Tony and the old school guys from the Soprano crew was always one of the most fascinating bits from the show. Paulie came up as an enforcer for Tony’s dad, and the thought of young Paulie draped in gold busting heads has me all the way in on this.
Look guys, I feel pretty good about this. David Chase is heavily involved, and it appears to be a very specific period they’re showcasing, so it doesn’t have the feel of a mail-in money grab. It’s a movie, which in my opinion makes it less likely that it tarnishes the Soprano brand if it ends up being traaaaaash. Maybe I’m naive, though.
Now it’s soapbox time. The Sopranos is the greatest of all time. It’s not only a GOAT, but it’s a goat that’s climbing up the side of a mountain by itself. Reasonable minds can differ (Breaking Bad, The Wire), but if it’s not in your top three, that’s a major red flag. More than just a little sus. The rewatchability factor is off the charts. Sure, season one is nineties as hell, and Tony’s old body style ‘burban is a relic to a lot of you millennial scum bags, but throwing on any episode from the series is a form of mediation.
If somehow you’ve never done this show from start to finish, go do it now. Tell no one about this egregious oversight, and then knock it out in the next month. I’ll keep you posted on the prequel as more details come out. .

The tracksuits featured throughout The Sopranos are all-time
Don’t even think about it jd
My dad just discovered the wonders of HBO programming and I made him watch The Sopranos. Upon finishing, I’m pretty sure it was the first time he ever said he was proud of me.
So what, no fuckin ziti now?
The gabagool? Bring that here
I never Stopped Believin’ they would make a movie
This hasn’t gotten NEARLY enough love.
As long as the movie doesn’t end with 10 seconds of a blank screen and silence…..
Whoa whoa whoa man spoiler alert!
It’s been 10 years
No mention of Dickie Moltisanti? Guy’s a legend.
Without Tony this will suck and the fact that you think this will be good is concerning
I don’t think James Gandolfini could have pulled off an 8-year old role anyway…
It’s David Chase. Have a little faith.
I……..really don’t know about this.
Confession: Anytime I watch a Soprano’s episode, I try to speak in a mob-style accent for the next few days. I don’t know why.
No James Gandolfini = no sopranos.
