Every day after work, I drive by a park where I can see about twenty dogs playing with each other in the distance. While sitting in traffic and paying no attention to the road, I gaze at the horizon with a dumb smile on my face looking at how happy they are while running freely on the manicured grass.
But as the stoplight lets us by a few cars at a time, the best part of my day quickly falls behind me and I go home to my dogless, quiet, clean house only to hang out without anyone or anything fiending for my attention. Frankly, it’s hell and I want a dog more than ever. And reading the list of most popular dog breeds didn’t help my psyche.
As reported by The American Kennel Club:
1. Retrievers (Labrador)
2. German Shepherd Dogs
3. Retrievers (Golden)
4. Bulldogs
5. Beagles
6. French Bulldogs
7. Yorkshire Terriers
8. Poodles
9. Rottweilers
10. Boxers
11. Pointers (German Shorthaired)
12. Siberian Huskies
13. Dachshunds
14. Doberman Pinschers
15. Great Danes
16. Miniature Schnauzers
17. Australian Shepherds
18. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels
19. Shih Tzu
20. Pembroke Welsh Corgis
21. Pomeranians
22. Boston Terriers
23. Shetland Sheepdogs
24. Havanese
25. Mastiffs
26. Brittanys
27. Spaniels (English Springer)
28. Chihuahuas
29. Bernese Mountain Dogs
30. Spaniels (Cocker)
Fuck. Reading that list is like being a little kid who just rolled into an ice cream shot. You want every flavor, but you know your dad will only let you get one, two max. Personally, I want to single-handedly take Springer Spaniels to the top of the list by buying a lodge and breeding the fuck out of ’em, but that’s just me. If Brittanys are more your speed, go hit up that local shelter and make one lucky pups day. Tell ’em I sent you. .

Will, you gotta get yourself a dog. I just got a black lab puppy and it’s been great. A lot of work/responsibility, but so worth it.
Labs are at the top for a reason
have a 7 month old yellow. SO MUCH ENERGY, but its so worth it.
#3 represent. I really do love big dogs like the Bernese and St. Bernards. One of my friends has a Newfoundland named Moss who’s really cool, even though I had to get stitches when I first met him because I stepped between Moss and my friend. You just have to know how to handle them. I just wish big dogs lived longer.
Ever since I adopted my best friend I have never understood why people have children.
Sad to not see pits on here although not surprised. They are wonderful dogs. I have 2 pit mixes and couldn’t ask for better.
I’d love to adopt a pit since there are so many but a lot cities and apartment complexes have banned them
All my pit mix wants to do is lick your face and hog the bed at night. Misunderstood breed is an understatement.
Not shocked to see that Australian Cattledog (red/blue heeler) wasn’t in there. stubborn little assholes but great dogs.
Funny you mention that. I have a 7-month old blue who I frequently call “stubborn little asshole”.
My miniature blue is awesome. Stubborn? Yes. But I’ve never had a smarter or more loyal dog.
They are incredibly loyal.
Yeah sounds about right. My red is almost 3 years old and is still just as stubborn and tried to “herd” me where she thinks I should go
I have a 3 month old red heeler. So the herding never stops? Super.
It slows some, once they figure out your not cattle. Mine has recently started herding my lab.
Heeler / Border Collie Mix, 10 weeks. Will only follow me or the other dog. If she’s feeling playful she’ll nip my ankles, as for the Chocolate lab mix, she’ll just straight chew on them.
So much hair. But he scared off an attempted burglar and he’s not a dick 100% of the time, so the price of bulk lint rollers is worth it.
FML
Nothing beats the husky. They talk back so I seem less crazy alone in my apartment
My buddy facetimed me yesterday with his new Frenchy pup. PGPowerMove
7+8 in the same dog. Chill as hell, great dog, but impossible to sound cool when you say “yeah, he’s a yorkiepoo.”
I accidentally googled animal shelters near me and almost committed to a ten year old terrier…
No matter what breed you get ADOPT ! Millions of good, adoptable dogs die every year just because they can’t find a home. Lots of shelters have breed waiting lists and will call when the breed you want comes in
Totally the way to go, you save a life when you rescue a dog and make room for another adoptable dog to take his/her place. I have 3 dogs, all rescues, and they are amazing. I adopted my golden retriever from a breed rescue (ABSOLUTELY the way to go if you want a purebred dog) when he was about 8 months old. He was a stray that was pulled from a rural shelter and put into foster care, so he was housetrained and up to date on everything when I got him. We also have a border collie mix (from a kill shelter) and a heeler/Catahoula leopard dog mix (from a woman who was getting rid of her). They are all pretty high energy, but they play at home all day and are ready to chill on the couch when we get home. Couldn’t imagine my life without dogs (GET ONE ALREADY WILL).
