Marcus Hanel has a great life. As a bullpen catcher, not only does he have the baseball-equivalent dream job of football’s contact-free practice team quarterback, but the man can also chow down on hilarious amounts of unhealthy food.
Hanel, who is not listed on the Brewers’ active 25-man roster, set a record at the Philadelphia Phillies’ Citizens Bank Park for most Philly cheesesteaks eaten during a three-game series, pounding 18 over the course of Milwaukee’s three-game sweep of the lowly Phillies. Perhaps six cheese steak sandwiches per game from your backup-backup catcher is a good luck charm.

According to Fox Sports, Hanel only needs to chow one more of these sandwiches in tonight’s game to break the ballpark’s four-game record of 19 sandwiches. If I’ve learned one thing about the one and only Marcus Hanel in the past 30 minutes (aside from the fact that he deserves a spot on the Reggie Cleveland All-Stars, of course) it’s that the man does not take his competitive eating lightly and will shatter that record with another six sandwiches tonight.
Unfortunately for Hanel, games are played on the Fourth of July, so he will not be able to participate in this Saturday’s Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in Brooklyn while his team plays in Cincinnati. While I still think this Eating Contest is a disgusting display of gluttony, nothing would delight me more than to see this all-American badass dominate the thing on ESPN in between games.
In honor of Hanel, when I attend my next MLB game, I’ll do my best to break the single-game ballpark record for number of beers drank..
