Everyone’s looking for an edge when it comes to marriage proposals. Sky banners, homemade furniture, a movie about your life being played in a movie theater, it’s all getting to be a bit too much. So it’s not like we should be in any way surprised when a guy in China set up 99 iPhone 6s in the shape of a heart to propose to his girlfriend. That’s about 500,000 yuan worth of product (about $85,000), which is a lot for a computer programmer’s salary.
It apparently wasn’t enough to impress his lady, because she said no.
Some people are speculating that this might be some retailer’s publicity stunt, since the proposal took place right before Singles Day, which sounds like a sad, Chinese bizarro-version of Valentine’s Day, and is apparently their biggest retail shopping day of the year.
However, given that the last failed marriage proposal I reported on, which included fireworks and accidental large-scale arson, was also in China, I’m willing to accept the idea that they’re just more prone to do crazy stuff over there that I don’t particularly understand to get their women to inevitably reject them.
Luckily, this guy won’t have to pay for phone insurance on his next plan, which will probably save him $85k in the long run anyway.
