The great TV news just keeps on coming today, folks: Netflix announced that come January 1st, 2015, every season of the damn-near universally-beloved NBC series “Friends” will be available for streaming. Every. “Friends” Episode. Ever.
“Friends”, which just celebrated its 20th anniversary, is one of the most popular TV series of all time. It was nominated for 62 primetime Emmys in its 10-season run, it’s on every “Best of TV” list from just about every publication out there, and its finale in 2004 was watched by 52.5 million American viewers, making it the fourth most watched series finale in history and the most watched TV episode of the decade.
NBC celebrated that anniversary by erecting a replica “Central Perk” pop-up store in New York City, which featured live music, props, and the real-live Gunther, aka actor James Michael Tyler, who also appears in this promotional video that Netflix created, because what the fuck else does he have to do.
Pretty exciting stuff! Rumors of a “Friends” reunion have been bandied about since approximately two-and-a-half minutes after the series went off the air, but much to the dismay of “Friends” fans everywhere (and NBC’s fledgling primetime schedule), no such plans are in place, so hopefully this is enough to keep those rabid Chandler Bing fans satisfied.
When asked if “Joey” would be coming to Netflix as well, executives laughed and hung up the phone on Matt LeBlanc. Probably.
